PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Matthew Fritz (ranked 1076 p4p, 935 weight class) and Dick Niaz (ranked 145 p4p, 125 weight class). Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 18 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Matthew Fritz!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 21 - 13 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Dick Niaz!
The judges for this bout are Paul Tew, Sam Margolis and Richard Clark.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Niaz blocks a jab.
Fritz's corner calls for a 1-2. Fritz obliges with the 1 part as he scores the single shot and moves back out of range.
Niaz tries to clinch but fails miserably
and Fritz counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.
Niaz wants to clinch.
Fritz swung with a counter right hand that didn't connect.
Niaz fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Fritz avoids it really well and circles away.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Niaz tries to close the distance and clinch up but Fritz swats him away and circles back towards the center.

Niaz shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Fritz as he jumps to the side.

Fritz has been working on his boxing with his coaches at Rollins Fitness in the buildup to the fight.
Fritz swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target.
Niaz misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
Matthew Fritz has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Dick Niaz.
Niaz ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face.
The fight stays on the outside here - Niaz looks like he's thinking about clinching though.

Fritz loads up on a big right hand but Niaz slips the punch.
Fritz will need to close the distance a bit before he attacks - that leg kick was thrown from too far away.
Niaz feints the counter takedown.
A swing and a miss from Fritz.
Niaz changes levels for a counter takedown but doesn't follow through with his attempt.
Fritz comes forward and lands a shot to the body, then darts back out of range.
Niaz moves out of range as Fritz strikes.

Niaz shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Fritz manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.

A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Fritz holds on and takes a little breather.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Fritz controls Niaz momentarily but Niaz frees himself.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up.
Good exchange - Fritz coming out on top.
Fritz misses with a straight right.

Niaz drives through and clinches with Fritz against the cage.
Niaz has Fritz pressed against the cage.

Niaz manages to pull guard.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Fritz tries to free his leg and advance position but Niaz is retaining full guard.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Niaz ducks under a wild hook from Fritz.
Fritz bobs and weaves and unloads with a good uppercut.
Niaz tries to clinch but Fritz is having none of it.
Fritz throws a hook but Niaz avoids it easily.
Niaz moves out of range of the strikes.

Niaz has taken the fight to the clinch.
Fritz is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Niaz can do to turn this around?
Fritz wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Niaz has him pressed against the cage.

And Niaz tries to counter it with a takedown but Fritz pushes his down on his head and steps out.

It looked like Fritz wanted to counter with a hook but didn't fully commit.
Niaz shoots for a takedown but Fritz saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.

Niaz closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Fritz's guard.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Niaz goes for an armbar here - this could be all over! But no, Fritz has escaped beautifully and is now on top in side control! Oh, that's unlucky for Niaz but great work by Fritz.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Niaz is sneaking out the side here. He's bucked Fritz off and has taken his back!
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

That's time! Fritz's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.

and Fritz cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.
Niaz uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Fritz.
Fritz throws a hook but Niaz avoids it easily.
Fritz takes a swing at Niaz's ribcage but misses.
Fritz avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Fritz ducks low and lands a nice hook to the body of his opponent.

Fritz lands a hook to the side of the head.
Fritz tries a body shot but Niaz blocks it.
Niaz jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Fritz walks away with a smile on his face. Niaz gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.

Niaz closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Fritz to the mat! Fritz manages to get full guard.

The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Niaz is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Fritz knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.

Niaz tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Niaz has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.

Well I reckon that's a shut out for Fritz, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
