PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Katsu Yamasaki (ranked 495 p4p, 653 weight class) and Chris John (ranked 70 p4p, 100 weight class). John has chosen Don't Stop Me Now as his entrance music. The atmosphere really building for this one as we go over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the lightweight championship of the world!
Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 6 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Katsu Yamasaki!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 8 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Chris John!
The judges for this bout are Sergei Dronov, Ivan Kurochkin and Igor Prikhodko.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
John thows a left - swing and a miss!
John tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
Yamasaki changes levels looking for a counter takedown but doesn't commit.
We've been hearing reports that Yamasaki has been drilling takedowns in recent sessions so let's see if that has an impact on the result of this fight.
Good exchange - John coming out on top.
A looping hook to the body misses from Yamasaki. John does a little dance to reset his feet.
Nice cross by John.
John cracks Yamasaki with a right hand to the side of the head.

Yamasaki looking for a takedown here - he's got it.
John wants to get back to his feet but Yamasaki is in a dominant position and won't allow it.
Yamasaki throws a strike but John rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.


Yamasaki escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. John gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Yamasaki is looking for a triangle but John pushes his legs off easily.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Yamasaki is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.

John decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.
Yamasaki looks to score with a jab to the body but John is just out of range.
John throws a body punch but Yamasaki moves out of range.
As John tries to get set, Yamasaki tries to push him back and clinch up but John manages to avoid the attempt.
Yamasaki moves away from the strike by John.
John ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Yamasaki moves away.
Yamasaki doesn't react quick enough there as he takes a shot to the body.
John tries to work over Yamasaki's front leg with a kick but Yamasaki checks it.
John thows a left - swing and a miss!
John misses with a hook. Yamasaki ducked under it nicely.
Yamasaki tries to counter by moving into the clinch but John manages to circle out of the way.
Yamasaki with poor footwork there. He got himself in a bit of a tangle, enabling John to score with a decent uppercut.
John connects with a crisp jab.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
John throws a right hand that misses

and Yamasaki counters with a single leg into guard. John didn't expect that.

John has managed to wall walk up one of the corner posts to get back to his feet. Yamasaki is pushing him up against the cage, looking to control the position.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Yamasaki goes for a takedown in the clinch but John prevents it.
John prevents a takedown attempt there.
Yamasaki is trying to pull guard but being pressed up against the cage enables John to keep the fight standing.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Katsu Yamasaki. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Still in the clinch, John scores with a nice short uppercut.
Yamasaki is looking for a takedown.
John lands with a right to the head.
John lands a body punch in the clinch.

Yamasaki is working on a single leg takedown against the cage. John can't fight it off and eventually Yamasaki manages to take the fight to the floor. John looks annoyed but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Yamasaki prevents John from getting back to his feet.
Yamasaki not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Yamasaki tries to free his leg and advance position but John is retaining full guard.
Yamasaki pushing down on John's thigh, trying to pass to half guard. He's managed it... Nice work.

John pushes Yamasaki off and gets back to his feet.
John displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Yamasaki.
John ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Yamasaki moves away.
A bone on bone clash there as Yamasaki blocks the leg kick.
Yamasaki tries to counter with a takedown but John is quick to defend against it.
Yamasaki with a nice cross.
John takes a jab on the nose there. A little bit of blood seems to be coming out. Hopefully that won't affect his breathing.
Yamasaki takes an uppercut right on the button but keeps his composure.
Yamasaki tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but John swivels and escapes.
Yamasaki takes a jab right on the nose. That must have hurt but he shrugs his shoulders and looks to return the favor.
Yamasaki takes one on the chin but seems OK.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
A big right from Yamasaki misses.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
A solid leg kick lands there for John.
John scores with a jab to the jaw of his opponent.
A low kick lands for John.
Yamasaki scores with a shot to the body.
Yamasaki fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
Yamasaki moves away from the strike by John.
Yamasaki appears to be looking for a counter takedown.
John misses with a right hand

and Yamasaki counters with a takedown into side control.
John keeping his opponent close.
John wants to escape from the position here - easier said than done!
The crowd applaud the fighters' efforts here as the round comes to an end.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Chris John dominated that round.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!

John throws a leg kick but Yamasaki sees it coming and moves out of range.
John's corner calls for a 1-2. John obliges with the 1 part as he scores the single shot and moves back out of range.
John moves into range and connects with a jab.
John is looking to land body kicks.
John throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Yamasaki ducks under a wild hook from John.
Yamasaki drops down looking for a counter takedown but John sprawls and moves away.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Yamasaki.
John connects with a single shot there.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
John circles to his right before unloading a perfect head kick! Yamasaki drops to the canvas, hurt badly! John follows Yamasaki to the ground and unloads with a series of strikes that force the referee to step in and end the fight! This one is all over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:49 of round 2, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Chris John!
Chris John is the new lightweight champion!
An out of breath Chris John thanked his loyal fans in his post fight interview, giving them credit for his success over the course of his career.
