PBP Commentary |
Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Sambo Sam (ranked 329 p4p, 2257 weight class) and Tobias Berge (ranked 51 p4p, 282 weight class). Tobias Berge told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of 9 - 5 - 0, fighting out of London, Sambo Sam! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of 12 - 11 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Tobias Berge! The judges for this bout are Ben Watson, Summer Carpenter and Ben Hemmingworth.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Sam tries to clinch but Berge moves out of range. Sam throws a series of punches but Berge avoids them all with ease. We can't be sure of the tactics at this early stage but we have heard that Berge has been working on his takedowns a lot in the buildup to the fight and we can only assume he's going to look to take this to the mat. Sambo Sam seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Berge closes the distance and clinches. Berge pulls Sam into guard.
Berge keeping moving, preventing Sam from controlling successfully. Sam is in close to Berge's body, working some short punches and elbows. Sam postures up.
Sam trying to control but Berge is working from the bottom. Berge has his foot on Sam's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Sam works his way back into a safe position though. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Sam is looking to work some ground and pound but Berge has wrist control. That's one minute gone in the round. Berge has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Sam can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself. Berge working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Sam doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Sam manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem. Sam throws a big right hand that misses. Berge throws his legs up looking for a submission but Sam uses it to pass to side control.

That's two minutes gone in the round. Berge is desperately trying to get back to half guard.
Sam has his opponent pinned against the cage, landing some nasty ground and pound that is really making a bit of a mess out of Berge's face.
A nice elbow there by Sam. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Berge tries to lock up and control but Sam gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away. Sam tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position. Sambo Sam took to the microphone after his victory and thanked his sponsors, Un-Kaged Nutrition for their support in the buildup to the fight. Tobias Berge spoke after the fight, saying 'It's whatever man. I'm gonna go smoke some weed after I get home and forget this ever happened.'.
