PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Dick Niaz (ranked 1331 p4p, 1716 weight class) and Guy River (ranked 170 p4p, 219 weight class). River has chosen Gabon National Anthem as his entrance music. Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 21 - 14 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Dick Niaz!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 25 - 17 - 0, fighting out of New York, Guy River!
The judges for this bout are James Ackerman, James Glass and Sam Margolis.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
River throws a jab to the body, straight down the pipe. Boom. That sent Niaz stumbling backwards but he manages to regain his composure quickly.
Niaz blocks a jab.
River swings for the body but Niaz moves out of range.
River misses the shot to the body.
River fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Niaz manages to avoid it.
A swing and a miss from River.
Nice defenses there by Niaz.

River tries to keep at a distance but Niaz has taken the fight into the clinch.
Niaz controlling the action here for a moment.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

The referee calls for Niaz to work.

River swings wildly with an uppercut but Niaz uses good head movement to avoid it.
Niaz is trying to pull guard but River turns him against the cage and we stay in the clinch.

Niaz jumps guard and drags River to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.

Niaz escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. River gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Niaz might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Niaz wants to sweep here but River controlling him for the moment.

Niaz isolates an arm and boxes in a triangle. River stacks Niaz on his neck as he steps over and passes to the side. He's now in a much more dominant position where he can look to do some serious damage. Nice move by River!
River really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Niaz. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

River stands up and we're back to a striking position.
Niaz uses decent footwork to sidestep a right hand from River.

River is trying to force a seperation but Niaz has the dominant position.
River lands a short shot on the inside that snaps the head of Niaz backwards.

Niaz tries to pull guard but River holds him up against the cage and eventually Niaz drops back down to his feet.
River has been looking to improve his clinch game in recent weeks. Niaz seems to have the measure of him in the clinch so far, so let's see if River can turn it around.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Niaz seems to be working for a kimura but River defends the submission attempt.
River pushes Niaz off looking to stand but Niaz dives back in and keeps control.

Niaz is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. River doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Niaz.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if River can do anything to dispel that myth.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Niaz seems to be looking for submissions.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.

River looks to land a left hand but Niaz moved out of range nicely.
Niaz changes levels looking for a counter takedown but doesn't commit.
River throws a leg kick that misses.
River keeps the fight on the outside.
A telegraphed right hand from River misses the target.
River swings for the body but Niaz moves out of range.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

River has one foot on Niaz's thigh - he pushes off and manages to get back to his feet.
River pulls out of a head kick attempt.
River is looking to chop away at Niaz's legs.
River tries to score with an inside leg kick but telegraphs it and Niaz is able to avoid easily.
River has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

Niaz thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Niaz takes a little break here. River wants to take advantage but he is being controlled well.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Dick Niaz will probably get the nod.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare each other down, ready to get back to the action. Let's hear some noise people - this is the final round!

Niaz is remaining active here, looking for the choke. The more discerning members of the crowd will appreciate his efforts.
