PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Latka Gravas (ranked 3230 p4p, 3114 weight class) and Scooter Ham (ranked 392 p4p, 380 weight class). Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Latka Gravas!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Scooter Ham!
The judges for this bout are Gregory Folan, Trevor Gratis and Yves DeLean.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Gravas throws a leg kick
and Ham makes him pay by landing a thudding low kick.
Ham tries to check a leg kick but that clearly hurt him.
Gravas thuds a mid kick into his opponent's body. That will wear on Ham if he has to take too many more of those.

Gravas has taken the fight to the clinch.
Ham misses with the head strike.
I was talking to Gravas's coach per-fight and he was telling me that they'd been working on the clinch in the runup to this fight.

Ham manages to break the clinch.
Gravas lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.
Ham stumbles momentarily as he takes a strong leg kick from Gravas.
Gravas fakes with a right hand and throws a good leg kick, right into the thigh. That had to hurt Ham.
Ham defending well as Gravas loads up on a big left hand.
Gravas slips a straight right by Ham.
Gravas slips under a jab.
Ham throws a quick inside leg kick.
Gravas tries to score with a leg kick but it misses it's target.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Ham misses with a wild body shot.

Gravas cracks Ham with an open hand slap.
Latka Gravas seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Gravas tries to clinch there but Ham circles away.
And an attempted straight right on the counter from Ham! But no joy.
Gravas moves into range and connects with a jab.
Ham displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Gravas throws out the jab.
Ham looks to land a left hand but Gravas moved out of range nicely.
Gravas ducks under a wild hook from Ham.
Gravas throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land.
Ham throws a nice head kick!
Ham tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
Gravas misses with a hook. Ham ducked under it nicely.
Ham lands an overhand left. A wild punch that just about connected.

Gravas gets a clinch.
Gravas lands a nice looking hook to the body, against the cage.

Gravas tries to land a knee to the head but Ham blocks with his arms.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Gravas throws a punch but it's blocked by Ham.
A short uppercut from Ham.
Gravas tries to work over Ham's body with a swooping hook but it only glances the target.
Gravas misses with a hook to the ribs.

Ham breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Ham misses the jab.
A decent looking cross lands there for Gravas.
Ham avoids a low kick by using good footwork.
Ham finds nothing but air with that leg kick attempt.
Gravas gets cracked with a nice right hand there by Ham.
Gravas misses with a low kick as Ham jumps back.
The fighters circling - Ham throws out the jab but it was never going to land.
Gravas does a little shimmy and throws a leg kick. The leg kick missed by a considerable margin though, making him look a little bit silly for doing the shimmy.
Ham avoids the body shot from Gravas.
A little jabbing left from Ham on the counter but it doesn't find it's target.

Ham needs to keep his hands up - Gravas had a free shot at his head there.
Gravas lands a kick to the ribs of his opponent. Nice work there - in and out in a flash.
A low kick lands for Gravas.
Gravas tries to clinch but Ham is having none of it.
Good work by Ham as he checks the leg kick.
Ham counters with a body kick.
Ham slips under a jab.
Ham walks forward, straight into a front kick from Gravas.
Ham on the receiving end of a decent leg kick there by Gravas. Gravas obviously looking to wear him down.
Ham will need to close the distance a bit before he attacks - that leg kick was thrown from too far away.
Donk. Gravas catches Ham right on the button with a cross.
Gravas throws the left hand but Ham avoids the punch easily.
Gravas scores with a jab to the jaw of his opponent.
Ham jabs. That one connects to the head of his opponent.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

and Ham makes him pay by landing a nice hook to the body before moving out of range.

Ham takes a shot right to the liver - Bas would have been proud of that punch.
Gravas throws out a leg kick but Ham moves out of range and Gravas only half commits.

Gravas tries to close the distance and clinch up but Ham swats him away and circles back towards the center.

Latka Gravas dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.

Gravas tests Ham's chin there with a solid looking shot.
Ham takes a body kick right on the floating rib. Ouchie.
Gravas thumps Ham with a low kick.
Gravas moves into range and lands a nice leg kick.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

The fighters circling - Gravas throws out the jab but it was never going to land.
Ham chopped to the floor by a nice leg kick but he springs right back up before Gravas can pounce on him.

and Ham makes the exchange count by landing a cracking kick to the body. Gravas really felt that one!

Ham throws a lazy right hand but Gravas sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Ham was about to counter that last move with a leg kick but changes his mind.
Gravas tries to close the distance and clinch but Ham swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.

Gravas fires out a quick counter leg kick but Ham just manages to avoid it.

Ham moves out of range of the leg kick from Gravas.
Gravas misses with a straight left.
Ham throws a body kick that misses.
Gravas waving his hands out in front of him, looking to distract Ham.
It seemed like Ham was going to counter with the hook but didn't fully commit to it.
Gravas stumbles momentarily as he takes a strong leg kick from Ham.
Gravas tries to clinch up but Ham circles away and keeps his distance.
That kick from Gravas tenderised Ham's leg. Ham is trying to keep his angry face on.

and Ham counters with a stiff right hand.
Gravas throws a hook but Ham blocks it.
Good exchange - Gravas coming out on top.

Ham throws a hook to the side of Gravas's head but Gravas sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.

Ham swats away the attempt to clinch by Gravas.
And an attempted straight right on the counter from Ham! But no joy.

Ham looks to throw the jab but Gravas is out of range.
A thudding body kick lands there by Gravas!
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Ham avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Ham's leg has a nasty welt from taking a succession of leg kicks. That must be slowing him down.
Ham swats away the attempt to clinch by Gravas.
Ham steps to the side to avoid the strikes from Gravas.
Gravas moves out of the way of the counter high kick fromHam.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Latka Gravas will probably get the nod.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! Let's hear some noise people - this is the final round!

Ham takes a really solid shot there but just smiles back and shrugs his shoulders.
Oooooooooooh, not good. A low kick from Gravas lands where it shouldn't have, right in the... well, you know what he did? He kicked him in the penis. He's injured, injured bad. The referee sends both fighters to their corners and Ham has 5 minutes to recover. He's OK now though... a thumbs up from Ham and we're back underway with a touch of gloves.
Ham throws out a counter right but Gravas avoids it with no problem.

and Gravas counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.

Gravas tries to land a front kick but Ham steps back. That was a bit too telegraphed.

and Ham counters with a perfectly timed head kick, knocking Gravas out cold! Wow, that took some serious skill and not a little luck! Ham is taking it in his stride though, strolling around like it's no big deal. What a guy.
