PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Georges Moxley (ranked 918 p4p, 1104 weight class) and Dick Niaz (ranked 113 p4p, 135 weight class). Moxley comes to the cage accompanied by Andre Nickatina - Color of the Benz. Georges Moxley has a significant reach advantage - let's see if he can make it count.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 28 - 16 - 1, fighting out of Amsterdam, Georges Moxley!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 22 - 14 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Dick Niaz!
The judges for this bout are William Gold, Donald Grub and Richard Clark.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Moxley throws a series of punches but Niaz avoids them all with ease.
Moxley thows a leg kick but Niaz checks it

and Niaz counters with a nice double leg into side control. Moxley won't be happy with that.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Moxley is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard.
Moxley is looking to escape.

Niaz is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
Moxley trying to hold on to Niaz's head to control him but Niaz postures up.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Niaz is taking a breather. Moxley says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Moxley is not content to let Niaz control the position.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Moxley is looking to escape.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up.

Niaz gets a takedown into half guard.
Niaz wants to pass the guard but Moxley is defending well.
Moxley is refusing to be controlled, as Niaz sits in half guard.
Moxley won't allow Niaz to pass to mount.

Niaz is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Moxley sees it coming and defends easily.

Niaz is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Moxley defends it well.

Niaz is working for a kimura here but Moxley manages to reverse the position and he's now in Niaz's guard.
Moxley wants to stand and escape but instead Niaz has hit a sweep and he's now on top in guard.

Moxley controls Niaz momentarily but Niaz frees himself.
Niaz is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
Moxley seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Niaz drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Moxley manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Niaz has Moxley in his guard.


Niaz had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Moxley defends it easily.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Dick Niaz will probably get the nod.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Moxley is trying to get back to full guard.
Niaz seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Moxley does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

Niaz stops Moxley from getting back to his feet.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Boom, another hit is landed. "You're gunna get knocked out" taunts Moxley, as that shot connected.

Niaz clinches up with Moxley and pushes him back against the cage.
Moxley wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Niaz has him pressed against the cage.
Niaz jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Moxley walks away with a smile on his face. Niaz gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
Niaz shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Moxley defends it nicely.
Niaz tries to close the distance and clinch but Moxley swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Niaz takes a body punch that cleary hurt but he's trying not to show any weakness.
Georges Moxley seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Moxley misses with a wild combination.
And Niaz tries to counter it with a takedown but Moxley pushes his down on his head and steps out.
Niaz tries to clinch there but Moxley circles away.
A quick step to the side and Moxley tries to counter with a shot to the body but it doesn't connect.
Moxley just misses with a punch to the body.
Moxley goes for a high kick. It partially lands.

It looks like Dick Niaz has been cut.
Moxley connects with a nice looking jab.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Niaz tries to clinch up but Moxley circles away and keeps his distance.

enabling Moxley to counter with a crisp jab.

Niaz is looking to take this fight into the clinch.
It looked like Moxley was looking amped, ready to throw a big counter but didn't commit.
Moxley lands a jab, followed by a cross and another cross, as Niaz backs up against the cage.
Moxley is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Niaz can do to turn this around?
Moxley just misses with a punch to the body.
Niaz changes levels for a counter takedown but doesn't follow through with his attempt.
Georges Moxley is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Moxley throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Niaz displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Moxley throws out the jab.

Moxley is using his height advantage well here, landing a good percentage of his punches.

The fight stays on the outside here - Niaz looks like he's thinking about clinching though.

Moxley slaps away a takedown attempt from Niaz, before circling back to the center of the mat.
Niaz gets cracked there but stands up to it.
Moxley throws a body shot but no joy.

Niaz manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Moxley manages to get himself to full guard.

After the fight, Georges Moxley was humble in paying tribute to his opponent but made it clear he wants to go on to bigger and better things. It seemed to go down well with the crowd who cheered him loudly.
