PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Sickwat Dan (ranked 2527 p4p, 1776 weight class) and Steve Sherk (ranked 326 p4p, 246 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Sickwat Dan !
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Steve Sherk!
The judges for this bout are Roosa Järviläinen, Tarja Halkonen and Marco Blurström.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Sherk jabbing away but nothing is landing.
Sherk pushing out the jab but it's not landing.

Dan fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Sherk to the ground. Dan is now in Sherk's guard.
Sherk controls Dan momentarily but Dan frees himself.
Sherk might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Dan haven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.
Dan has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

Sherk moves into full guard.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Dan wants to pass the guard but Sherk is keeping the position.

Dan drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Sherk manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Dan has Sherk in his guard.

Dan has Sherk pulled in close to control his posture.

My spies in The Jungle Room inform me that Sherk has been getting involved in the gym's BJJ sparring sessions. Let's see whether that pays dividends!

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Dan seems keen to control Sherk's posture.
Dan is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Dan is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Dan not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.
Dan misses with a head shot. Sherk uses the momentum to regain guard.

Dan postures up and lands a big shot to Sherk's brow.

Dan working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Dan is nestled in close to Sherk, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.
Sherk works his way to full guard. Good work.
Sherk controls Dan momentarily but Dan frees himself.
Sherk has his hands on Dan 's head, controlling the position.
Sherk trying to keep a closed guard but Dan is proving a slippery customer.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Dan sitting in guard, not really doing much.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Sickwat Dan dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.

Sherk has his head slapped from side to side by a 3 punch combination. That must have hurt him.

It looks like Steve Sherk has been cut.
Dan shoots in looking for a takedown but Sherk manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Dan 's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.
Sherk throws out a counter right but Dan avoids it with no problem.
Sherk misses with a hook.
Dan shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Sherk pinned against the cage. Sherk gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
And an attempted straight right on the counter from Sherk! But no joy.
Dan shoots in for a takedown but Sherk shows good takedown defense.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Sickwat Dan . That's going to take a lot out of him.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
A jab from Sherk misses.
Dan is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Sherk can do to turn this around?
Nice takedown defense from Sherk. No joy for Dan on that attempt.
Dan dives in for a single leg takedown but Sherk sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage.
Sherk misses with some punches.

Sherk taking a breather.
Dan has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Sherk avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.
Sherk misses with a body punch.
Dan avoids the elbow strike from Sherk, against the cage.
With the two fighters working up against the cage, Sherk just misses with a elbow thrown towards Dan 's brow.
Sherk using the Thai plumb to throw knees but Dan has his back arched nicely, preventing the strike.
Sherk wants to stall.

Dan works for the underhooks and manages to get a trip takedown into guard.
Dan wants to control from the top but Sherk keeps moving.
Sherk is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.

Sherk working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Dan doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Dan manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Dan works a leg free and moves into half guard.
Sherk is staying active underneath Dan , who seems content to just control the action from this position.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Dan working over Sherk with some ground and pound. Sherk looks like he wants out of this position, which is understandable.
Sickwat Dan overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Sherk wants to control the action here but instead Dan manages to pass to full mount!

Sherk is looking to get to half guard.

Dan throws some wild stikes that Sherk manages to avoid easily.
Dan looking to control and managing it successfully.
Sherk sneaks a leg back under and regains half guard and is working straight away to try and get back to guard. He hasn't managed just yet though.

Sherk moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.

Sherk not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Dan postures up and lands some nice ground and pound.
Sherk is trying to control the position from the bottom.

Dan is posturing up here but Sherk has hold of an arm and he's gone for an armbar! Dan tries to roll out but it's too tight and Dan has to tap! Slick submission there by Sherk!
