PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Valen Dreth (ranked 488 p4p, 581 weight class) and Chike Obi (ranked 77 p4p, 87 weight class). Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Dreth throws a low kick but Obi avoids it.
Obi now looks to counter with a shot at the body.

Valen Dreth seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Obi jumps guard but Dreth stands there with Obi around his waist. Obi gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.

Valen Dreth has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Chike Obi.

Obi with poor footwork there. He got himself in a bit of a tangle, enabling Dreth to score with a decent uppercut.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

Obi tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Dreth was well out of range. Poor timing from Obi.

Dreth is really peppering his opponent's head with punches.
Dreth fakes with a right hand and throws a good leg kick, right into the thigh. That had to hurt Obi.
That kick from Dreth tenderised Obi's leg. Obi is trying to keep his angry face on.
Dreth swats away the attempt to clinch by Obi.

Obi misses with an uppercut. Dreth saw that one coming.
Obi takes one on the button.
Dreth thumps Obi with a low kick.
Obi tries to close the distance and clinch but Dreth swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Dreth was looking to counter that move with a punch but didn't quite pull the trigger.
Dreth misses with a right hand
and Obi counters nicely by changing levels and landing a hook to the body.
A cross from Obi lands.
Obi moves out of range of the strikes.

Obi checks a low kick. Bone on bone - not my idea of a good time.
Dreth throws a body punch but Obi moves out of range.
A nice leg kick lands there from Dreth.
Obi throws a body shot but no joy.
Dreth takes one on the chin but seems OK.
Dreth walks forward and throws out a flicking leg kick. Obi checks it nicely though, as he moves to the side.

Obi rushes Dreth and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.

Obi manages to pull guard.
Dreth postures up and lands some nice ground and pound.
Obi is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage.
Obi is trying to control the position but Dreth postures up.

Obi working for submissions but it's allowed Dreth to get to half guard.
Obi tries to roll over but Dreth keeps him under control.

Obi has found himself in a tricky position here. He's been working his transitions in training so let's see if he can work his way out of it.
Dreth is trying to control. Obi wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.
Obi slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work.

Obi is working actively from the bottom, looking for submissions. He's escaped his hips to the side and he's going for an armbar! Dreth has his hands clasped together but Obi extends and breaks Dreth's desperate grasp, forcing a tap out due to armbar! Nice BJJ displayed there by Obi.
