PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Cody Evans (ranked 1707 p4p, 1724 weight class) and Jamal Hudak (ranked 162 p4p, 163 weight class). Well, the cameraman is lingering on a pretty young lady for a bit too long there. Keep your eyes on the prize buddy or you'll miss the fighter intros!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 11 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Cody Evans!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 9 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Jamal Hudak!
The judges for this bout are John Kavanagh, Eddie Farnsworth and Reed Andrews.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Evans scores with the left hand. Hudak knows he should have avoided that one.
Hudak lands a really nice looking cross but Evans seems unphased.
Hudak shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Evans but Evans pushes him off and we're back to square one.

Hudak moves into range and clinches up with Evans.
Hudak tries for a takedown. No joy.

Evans turns his back and goes for a hip toss. It's a bit messy but it gets the job done and Evans manages to end up in side control.
Evans scores with a couple of short elbows.
Evans scores with a couple of nice shots to the head there. The referee takes a look at Hudak to see if he's OK.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Evans goes for an armbar! This could be all over! Wait, no, Hudak rolls with the submission and now he's on top in Evans's guard! Nice work there by Hudak!

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Hudak is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Evans is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.
Evans manages to get back to half guard.
Evans looks like he's trying to stand up.
Evans is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Evans is refusing to be controlled, as Hudak sits in half guard.

Hudak is looking for a kimura but Evans is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Hudak to get the leverage.
Evans holds on for dear life, maintaining half guard for now.

Hudak stalling away here and it's allowed Evans to slip out his trapped foot and regain full guard.
Evans with a couple of shots from the bottom there - nothing Hudak can't handle though.
Evans is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.
Evans has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up.

Evans throws a series of punches but Hudak moves out of range.
Hudak misses with a straight right.
Evans half commits to a counter takedown before pushing away, out of range.

Evans closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Hudak did well to prevent Evans getting side control.

Hudak is trying to defend against the ground and pound but Evans scores with a couple of nice shots.

The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Evans stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Evans wants it to stay on the feet.

We've been hearing that Evans has been drilling a lot of ground and pound in training, so let's see if he get the finish.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.
Evans's corner is telling him to maintain position.

Hudak lands with a right hand.
Hudak shoots in but Evans avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Cody Evans has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Jamal Hudak.

That was a close second round but I would say that Cody Evans will probably get the nod.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! This is the final round!

Hudak takes a hook to the side of the head. I wonder if that's got his ears ringing.

Hudak gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Evans to score an easy takedown into full guard.

Hudak escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Evans gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Hudak isolates an arm and boxes in a triangle. Evans stacks Hudak on his neck as he steps over and passes to the side. He's now in a much more dominant position where he can look to do some serious damage. Nice move by Evans!

Hudak gets one leg under and gets the fight to half guard.
Evans is figuring out what he wants to do next.

Evans seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Hudak does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

Evans stands up over Hudak, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.

Hudak looking to sweep using the butterfly guard but Evans puts pay to that idea as he passes nicely into half guard.
The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Evans connects with a nice short shot to Hudak's temple.
Evans working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.
Evans wants to take a breather but Hudak is having none of it.

Hudak is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Evans pulls his head out easily.

Hudak utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.

The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Hudak working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Evans doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Evans manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

And that's the end of the fight!

Well I reckon that's a shut out for Evans, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
