PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Paulo Mendes (ranked 2249 p4p, 1865 weight class) and Reggie Charles (ranked 298 p4p, 240 weight class). Mendes comes to the cage accompanied by Future - Last Breath. I can't wait for this one - let's get the fighter introductions out of the way and get this one started!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Paulo Mendes!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 6 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Reggie Charles!
The judges for this bout are Yves DeLean, Alec Ball and Ian Loll.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Charles gets the takedown into side control.
Charles creates some space and throws a big elbow, but Mendes sees it coming and moves his head just enough to avoid the strike.
Mendes sneaks a leg under to get back to half guard.
Mendes wants to control but Charles is keeping busy and won't allow it.
Mendes keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.
Charles lands a big shot. The thud that echoes around the arena is like music to the fans' ears.
Mendes has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Charles is working away from the top position though.

Charles is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Mendes regains full guard. Nicely done.

Mendes wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now.

Charles wants to pass the guard but Mendes is keeping the position.

Charles got a little sloppy there for a moment and Mendes has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Charles has managed to get both his arms back between Mendes's legs - danger averted.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Charles lands a nice shot to the body.
Charles avoids a punch combination nicely.
A nice side step and Charles releases a counter shot to the body, but it doesn't find it's home.

Mendes feints and as Charles raises his hands in defense, Mendes changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Mendes is fighting to break Charles's control of his arms but Charles is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.
Our spies down at at Triumph Over Fear inform us that Charles has really been working on his submissions in the buildup to this fight. Will it pay off?
Charles is trying to keep Mendes in close.
We've been hearing that Mendes has been drilling a lot of ground and pound in training, so let's see if he get the finish.

Charles looks to be working for a triangle here. Oh, it looks like he might have it! Mendes has picked Charles up and slammed him! Charles can't keep hold of the triangle and Mendes manages to pass to side control!

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

Mendes is in a dominant position here, looking for a kimura. Charles looks calm but he's in trouble here. Mendes gets his leg over his opponent's head and yanks on the arm. Charles is tapping like a morse code operator on the titanic! SOS! SOS! Mendes lets go of the hold and Charles can pop his arm back in it's socket.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:19 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kimura). Paulo Mendes!
Paulo Mendes tried to hype himself up post fight but didn't word it too well and it ended up with him sounding like a bit of a tool.
