Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between William Smyth (ranked 5566 p4p, 2260 weight class) and Phoenix Peterson (ranked 550 p4p, 291 weight class). Peterson is bouncing up and down as he enters the arena, backed by Red Nation. Both fighters really staring each other down here, as Phoenix Peterson enters the cage!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 5 - 17 - 1, fighting out of London, William Smyth!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Phoenix Peterson!
The judges for this bout are Paul Gruel, Josh West and Micheangelo Fripello.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Peterson with a hook.
Peterson jabbing away but nothing is landing.
Peterson swings and misses with a hook to the body.
Smyth takes a jab right on the nose. That must have hurt but he shrugs his shoulders and looks to return the favor.

Smyth shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Smyth showed some decent athleticism there.
Peterson trying to control from the bottom.
Smyth throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.
Smyth seems to have lost interest with the ground game and is thinking about standing back up.
Smyth tries to pass the half guard into mount. Peterson knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.
Smyth is keen to just control but Peterson is a slippery customer.
Peterson wants to control but Smyth is keeping busy.
Smyth throwing shots but Peterson is blocking nicely.

Smyth missing with some ground and pound from the half guard.
Peterson is trying to get back to full guard.
Peterson is trying to stand up here but Smyth is controlling him well.
Smyth wants to free his trapped foot but Peterson is holding on for dear life with his legs.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Peterson takes a swing at Smyth's ribcage but misses.
Smyth misses with a takedown attempt - Peterson sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.

We've been told by Smyth's head coaches at Shut Up & Train! {$1000} that he's been working on his takedown defense in preparation for this fight.

Smyth tries to counter by moving into the clinch but Peterson manages to circle out of the way.
Peterson throws a half hearted mid kick.

Smyth gets cracked with a nice right hand there by Peterson.
A jab from Peterson finds it's way through Smyth's defenses.

Smyth throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Peterson tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Smyth is in Peterson's guard.
Peterson wants to get back to his feet but Smyth is in a dominant position and won't allow it.
Smyth sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Peterson's guard.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Peterson wants to get back to full guard but Smyth has mounted him!
Peterson can't escape the position.
Smyth trying to control but he's not successful this time.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Smyth thuds his fist into the canvas! Oooouch!

Smyth with some aggressive grappling here. He's looking for submissions here, rather than waiting for the opportunity to counter.
Smyth prevents Peterson from getting the reversal.

Smyth stands up from the dominant position. He obviously fancies his chances standing.

Smyth changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Peterson looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
Peterson wants to get back to his feet but Smyth drags him back down.
Peterson is positioning himself to get back to half guard.

Smyth is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Peterson knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.

Smyth takes a little break here. Peterson wants to take advantage but he is being controlled well.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that William Smyth will probably get the nod.
That's time! Back to the action!

A jab from Peterson finds it's way through Smyth's defenses.
Smyth on the wrong end of an overhand right that came out of nowhere.
Peterson misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Smyth fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
A little jabbing left from Peterson on the counter but it doesn't find it's target.
Smyth uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Peterson.
A low kick lands for Peterson.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Smyth.
And an attempted straight right on the counter from Peterson! But no joy.
Peterson dances in quickly and lands a nice inside leg kick on Smyth. That did some damage!
Peterson throws a head kick that connects with a bit of head and a bit of hand.
Peterson leaves Smyth with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for William Smyth. That's going to take a lot out of him.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Smyth uses good head movement to avoid the hook from Peterson.

Smyth closes the distance and clinches up with Peterson, looking for a takedown. Smyth pushes Peterson against the cage but Peterson circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.

A telegraphed takedown attempt from Smyth is defended easily by Peterson.
Smyth fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
Peterson tries a head kick but it misses.
William Smyth is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Peterson slips in close and lands a nice hook before moving back out of range.

Peterson throws out a loose jab but Smyth uses good head movement to avoid it.
Smyth takes a step back and watches a body kick go sailing past his mid section.

No luck for Smyth with that takedown attempt.
Smyth shoots in for a double leg but Peterson sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
A decent looking cross lands there for Peterson.
Peterson throws a right and a left that Smyth avoids nicely.
Smyth seemed to be looking to counter by closing the distance.

Smyth shoots in looking for a takedown but Peterson manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Smyth's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

William Smyth overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Smyth frees up his trapped foot and advances to mount.
Peterson is trying to reverse the position but instead Smyth has taken his back - oops!

Smyth tries to get the hooks in deep but Peterson pushed the leg off.

I think Peterson has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
