PBP Commentary |
Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Richard Mesquita (ranked 14 p4p, 154 weight class) and Chris John (ranked 1 p4p, 18 weight class). The crowd seem to be enjoying John's choice of entrance music: Don't Stop Me Now. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the lightweight championship of the world!
Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 25 - 9 - 0, fighting out of New York, Richard Mesquita!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 22 - 5 - 2, fighting out of Las Vegas, Chris John!
The judges for this bout are Frank Antenori, Percy O'Donnell and Timothy Bukovac.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
John misses with a body shot
and Mesquita counters with a nice uppercut.
John throws a shot from downtown. Mesquita moves away and avoids it.
Mesquita checks a low kick from John.
Mesquita misses with an uppercut. John saw that one coming.
Mesquita cracks a nice hook into John's ribs.
Mesquita dives in for a single leg takedown but John sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage.
John scores with a shot to the side of Mesquita's head.
Mesquita goes for a body shot but it's blocked.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
John scores with a kick to the midsection.
Mesquita throws a hook but John avoids it easily.
John slaps away a takedown attempt from Mesquita, before circling back to the center of the mat.

John scores with a big left there. The judges will like that one.
John misses with a straight right.
Mesquita closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Mesquita lands in his opponent's guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
John wants to stand up but Mesquita is controlling him.
John trying to punch from his back but it's not doing any damage.

John has managed to wall walk up one of the corner posts to get back to his feet. Mesquita is pushing him up against the cage, looking to control the position.
Still in the clinch, John scores with a nice short uppercut.
John has a couple of punches blocked by Mesquita.
Mesquita drops down for a takedown but doesn't get it.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Richard Mesquita. That's going to take a lot out of him.
John tries a shoulder strike but it doesn't do any damage.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
John breaks from the clinch.
Mesquita uses good footwork to get in and out, landing a nice hook.
Mesquita tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but John defends well and Mesquita ends up having to push John into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.
John misses with a hook from the clinch.
John throws a head punch that misses.
Mesquita pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Chris John is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Mesquita is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in John's half guard.
Mesquita seems to be looking for submissions.
John is trying to control but can't.
Mesquita is looking for submissions but instead, John has regained full guard.
Mesquita stays in close to John's body and controls the position.
That's three minutes gone in the round.
John trying to keep a closed guard but Mesquita is proving a slippery customer.
Hammerfist, elbow! yells Mesquita's corner. There ya go! There ya go!
Mesquita is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact.
John is looking to stand up but Mesquita isn't so interested in that idea.
Mesquita scores with a decent looking elbow strike.
John wants to stand and escape but Mesquita is having none of it.
Mesquita with a nice head shot there.

Mesquita postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head.
Mesquita postures up and lands some nice ground and pound.
John manages to escape and get back to his feet.
John takes one on the chin but keeps coming.
Mesquita throws a jab but it's blocked by John.
Mesquita lands with a hook. John tried to avoid it but it clipped the top of his head.
John throws out a token jab with nothing on it.
John misses the jab.
This has been an exciting period of action!
John bobs and weaves and throws out a fast jab that snaps Mesquita's head backwards.
John uses good footwork to get in and out, landing a nice hook.
John throws a hook but Mesquita avoids it easily.
John moving in and out of range nicely, whilst landing the scoring shot.
Mesquita checks a leg kick.
Chris John seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
John looks to land a body kick but Mesquita moved away.
John tries to close the distance and clinch but Mesquita swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.
A close round but Chris John will probably get the nod.
That's time! Mesquita's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.
John loads up on a big right hand but Mesquita slips the punch.
John scores with a punch to the gut of his opponent.
Mesquita shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches John napping and manages to drive through into side control!
John wants to get back to his feet but Mesquita drags him back down.

Mesquita lands some shots froms side control.
John takes a couple of big shots there - the referee warns him that he has to defend himself better.
John holds on tight, trying to prevent any damage.
Mesquita has hold of John's arm here. He's working for an Americana. It looks like he might have it! John tries to escape but he's just digging himself in deeper - Mesquita cranks the arm and John screams in pain! The ref makes a decision and ends the fight before the tap - no complains from John, who is just happy to have his arm attached to his body.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:52 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Americana). Richard Mesquita!
