PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Dick Niaz (ranked 508 p4p, 421 weight class) and Sledge Wrou (ranked 67 p4p, 55 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 28 - 16 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Dick Niaz!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 11 - 4 - 0, fighting out of London, Sledge Wrou!
The judges for this bout are Frank Antenori, Percy O'Donnell and Don Winkell.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Niaz is trying hard to land a takedown here. Wrou sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.
Wrou feints a counter leg kick.
Niaz looks to have improved his striking defense since last time we saw him fight.

Niaz rushes Wrou and presses him up against the cage.

Niaz jumps guard and drags Wrou to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.
Wrou pushes down on Niaz's leg and manages to get into half guard.
Niaz preventing any damage for now, controlling his opponent's head.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Wrou slows the pace down in half guard.
Wrou seems to have lost interest with the ground game and is thinking about standing back up.
Wrou takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Niaz tries to get to full guard but Wrou has control of the leg.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.
Wrou controlling the pace.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
Wrou defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Niaz.
Wrou looked like he wanted to counter with a punch but didn't throw it.
Niaz tries to clinch up
and Wrou connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.

Niaz gets in close and instigates a clinch.
Niaz's corner are urging him to control the action in the clinch for a moment, rather than mount any serious offense. I'm sure the crowd appreciate those instructions... not.

Wrou misses with some punches.
Wrou works for underhooks and lands a body shot in the process.

Niaz pulls guard effortlessly.

Niaz isolates an arm and boxes in a triangle. Wrou stacks Niaz on his neck as he steps over and passes to the side. He's now in a much more dominant position where he can look to do some serious damage. Nice move by Wrou!
Niaz manages to get one leg in to regain half guard.
Still in half guard, Wrou seems content to control.

Niaz is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Wrou pulls his head out easily.
Niaz is looking to control Wrou's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Niaz avoid being mounted?
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

A close round but Sledge Wrou will probably get the nod.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!

Niaz tries to clinch but Wrou moves out of range.

Niaz is trying to pull guard but Wrou turns him against the cage and we stay in the clinch.

Niaz shoots for a takedown but Wrou saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.

Niaz gets tackled into the cage by Wrou. Wrou maintains the clinch.

Niaz is working hard here but doesn't seem to be able to control effectively, up against the cage.
Wrou stops a takedown attempt from Niaz.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Dick Niaz. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Niaz is trying to pull guard but being pressed up against the cage enables Wrou to keep the fight standing.
Niaz tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Wrou just stands there and leans against the cage.
Wrou throws a punch but it's blocked by Niaz.
Wrou swings away with an uppercut that misses.
Niaz tries to pull guard but Wrou holds him up against the cage and eventually Niaz drops back down to his feet.
Wrou has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Wrou goes for a body shot but it's blocked.
Niaz jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Wrou walks away with a smile on his face. Niaz gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
Niaz wants to clinch but Wrou slips to the side
and Wrou makes him pay by landing a nice hook to the body before moving out of range.
Niaz uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Wrou.
Niaz changes levels looking for a counter takedown but doesn't commit.
Niaz tries to clinch up but Wrou circles away and keeps his distance.

Niaz has his takedown stuffed
and Wrou counters with a right hand to the body.
Niaz tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
Wrou swats away the attempt to clinch by Niaz.
A telegraphed right hand from Wrou misses the target.
Wrou throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Niaz changes levels looking for a counter takedown but doesn't commit.
Wrou keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.

Niaz feints and as Wrou raises his hands in defense, Niaz changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.

Niaz drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Wrou manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Niaz has Wrou in his guard.

The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Niaz is looking for a sweep. Wrou is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Sledge Wrou showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. This is the final round!

Niaz is looking to take this fight into the clinch.
Niaz tries to close the distance and clinch but Wrou swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Sloppy strikes from Wrou. Those never looked like landing.
The fight stays on the outside here - Niaz looks like he's thinking about clinching though.

Wrou swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target.

Niaz shoots in and gets a takedown into Wrou's guard.

Niaz sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Wrou's guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Niaz is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Wrou has managed to free his arm - good work.
Wrou moves into full guard.
Dick Niaz has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Niaz won't allow Wrou to sweep him here.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Wrou throws a head punch that misses.
Wrou gets through Niaz's defenses to land a nice punch to the side of the head.

Wrou lands with a short shot to the head.
Wrou misses with a punch on the inside.
A nice right hand lands inside from Wrou.
Sledge Wrou seems to be working more effectively in the clinch in the fight so far.
Wrou throws a head punch that misses.
Niaz is trying to pull guard but Wrou turns him against the cage and we stay in the clinch.

Wrou pushes Niaz back against the cage and lands a hook to the side of the head.
Wrou has a couple of punches blocked by Niaz.
Wrou tries a shoulder strike but it doesn't do any damage.
Wrou lands a right uppercut that snaps the head of Niaz backwards.

Sledge Wrou comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Wrou has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
