PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Gabriel Soares (ranked 796 p4p, 504 weight class) and Yasol Kim (ranked 90 p4p, 62 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 18 - 13 - 1, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Gabriel Soares!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 40 - 20 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Yasol Kim!
The judges for this bout are Wagner Zegers, Paul Aken and Albert Achterberg.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Kim throws a nice outside leg kick.
Kim swings and misses with a hook to the body.
Soares tries to counter by moving into the clinch but Kim manages to circle out of the way.
Soares waving his hands out in front of him, looking to distract Kim.
Kim cracks Soares with a right hand to the side of the head.

Kim gets a clinch.
Kim is trying to slow down the pace of the fight but Soares is keeping busy.
Kim struggles to land a body shot inside as Soares controls his hands.
Kim misses with a hook to the ribs.
Kim misses with the head strike.
A short left from Kim.
Kim throws a head punch that misses.
Kim tries to land a shot to the body but it's blocked.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Soares tries to pull guard but Kim won't allow it.
Soares tries to pull guard but Kim holds him up against the cage and eventually Soares drops back down to his feet.
Soares lands with a left to the head.
I was talking to Soares's coach per-fight and he was telling me that they'd been working on the clinch in the runup to this fight.
Kim can't find room to land a body shot as Soares controls the action.

Soares manages to pull guard.
Kim trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.

Soares working away from the bottom but not quite defensive enough there because Kim has passed into half guard!
Soares is pressing down on Kim's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.
Kim is stalling in the full guard.
Soares trying to keep a closed guard but Kim is proving a slippery customer.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.

Kim working to pass to mount. He's got his hand pressing down on Soares's thigh. Soares counters though and makes it back to full guard.
Kim wants to control from the top but Soares keeps moving.

Kim must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Kim throws a strike but Soares rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

Kim manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Soares manages to get himself to full guard.

Soares throws his legs up looking to secure a triangle. Oh, that looks pretty tight, I gotta say! Kim escapes and throws Soares's legs to the side, diving into side control!

Kim has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

Soares blocks a couple of punches on the inside.

Soares manages to pull guard. Let's see whether he can land a sub off his back.
Kim sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Soares's guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Kim is looking to work some ground and pound but Soares has wrist control.

Soares lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.

Soares drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Kim dives on top into guard.

Kim is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.
Soares not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Kim tries to free his leg and advance position but Soares is retaining full guard.
Kim trying to control the position from guard on top but Soares is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Soares escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Kim gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Kim is fighting to break Soares's control of his arms but Soares is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.

Soares escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Kim gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Soares keeping moving, preventing Kim from controlling successfully.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Yasol Kim showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare each other down, ready to get back to the action. The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!

Kim tries to clinch up but Soares circles away and keeps his distance.
Soares wants to take advantage of his opponent's missed offense by moving into the clinch.
Soares moves away from the strike by Kim.
Soares doesn't react quick enough there as he takes a shot to the body.
Soares throws the left hand but Kim avoids the punch easily.

and Soares counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Soares.
Soares tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Kim smiles and moves away.

Soares moves into range and clinches up with Kim.

Soares's head jolts backwards as he takes an uppercut right on the button!
Kim swings wildly with an uppercut but Soares uses good head movement to avoid it.

With the fighters clinched against the cage, Kim creates a bit of distance for himself and scores with a nice uppercut.

Soares goes for a body shot but it's blocked.
Soares tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Kim smiles and moves away.
Kim wants to clinch up but Soares keeps it at a distance.

Soares has closed the distance and engaged Kim in a clinch.

Yasol Kim seems to be working more effectively in the clinch in the fight so far.

Soares is trying to pull guard but being pressed up against the cage enables Kim to keep the fight standing.

Kim is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Soares stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Kim swivels though and keeps the full guard.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Soares circles away from the clinch attempt.

Gabriel Soares has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Yasol Kim comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Kim has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
