PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Mate Orsic (ranked 157 p4p, 911 weight class) and En Route (ranked 19 p4p, 101 weight class). Orsic comes to the cage accompanied by KRS One - Rappaz R. N. Dainja. Mate Orsic had real problems making weight for this fight. After initially coming in at 156.3lbs, he had two hours to make the official fight weight. He made it but it will have taken a lot out of him to cut those extra few pounds. Buckle up people - heeeeeeeeeere we go!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the lightweight championship of the world!
Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 30 - 15 - 1, fighting out of New York, Mate Orsic!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 24 - 14 - 2, fighting out of Amsterdam, En Route!
The judges for this bout are Albert Achterberg, Paulsen Ambrosius and Patrick Alders.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Route is looking to slow Orsic down with leg kicks.
Route misses with a straight left.
Orsic misses with an uppercut. Route saw that one coming.
Orsic misses with a body shot.
Route throws a hook but Orsic avoids it easily.
Orsic has his front leg slapped to the side - a nice low kick landing there from Route.

Route has closed the distance and engaged Orsic in a clinch.
Route lands with a light punch inside.

Route pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Route uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Orsic.
We've been informed that Route has been sparring a lot of Muay Thai in the buildup to this fight so let's see if that has an impact on the result.
Orsic throws a shot from downtown. Route moves away and avoids it.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Jab, jab by Orsic - just one landing.
Orsic misses with a looping left.
Route uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Orsic.
Orsic takes a body kick right on the floating rib. Ouchie.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Route bobbing and weaving, closes the distance and lands a hook to the side of Orsic's head.
Route scores with a nice body kick.

Route gets a clinch.
A right handed body shot lands from Route.
Orsic is looking to break free of the clinch but Route has double underhooks.
Orsic wants to break the clinch but can't.
Route cracks Orsic with a nice body shot.
Route misses with a hook from the clinch.
Route lands a nice shot to the body.
Route misses with the head strike.
Route tries to throw a body punch but Orsic avoids it by throwing Route back against the cage.
Orsic working hard to break the clinch.
Route creates a bit of distance and throws an elbow that only just misses.
Orsic is working hard here but doesn't seem to be able to control effectively, up against the cage.
Route stays in close to his opponent and throws a right hand to the body.
Route swings wildly with an uppercut but Orsic uses good head movement to avoid it.

Orsic misses with a punch on the inside.
Route tries to throw a body punch but Orsic avoids it by throwing Route back against the cage.
Orsic doesn't land with the attempted body shot.
A right handed body shot lands from Route.
Route misses with the head strike.
Orsic blocks an elbow strike from Route.
Route throws a head punch that misses.
A head punch blocked on the inside by Orsic.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Orsic stalling the fight.
Route lands a short shot on the inside that snaps the head of Orsic backwards.
Orsic tries to score a body lock takedown but Route shows good agility there to stay on his feet.
Orsic prevents a body shot from Route.
Orsic blocks an uppercut.
Orsic displaying some good clinch control by pressing Route up against the cage.

Orsic has hold of one of Route's legs. Route is fighting the takedown attempt but Orsic gets the trip and lands the takedown into guard.
Route trying to keep a closed guard but Orsic is proving a slippery customer.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Orsic trying to control but Route is working from the bottom.
Route really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Orsic. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Route has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Orsic can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Orsic will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

Orsic is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.

Route working for a triangle but Orsic defends it easily.

Route throws his legs up looking for a submission but Orsic uses it to pass to side control.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Route seems a little lost for a moment, as Orsic dominates the positioning.
Route trying his best to control but Orsic has mounted him.
Orsic lands a couple of nice shots there from mount.

Orsic working for a submission here. He's tucked his head under his opponent's arm, looking for an arm triangle. He's hopped off into side control, looking to tighten the submission... is it going to work? He's given up a good position looking for it. Route looks OK. Oh, I spoke too soon, he's out! That must have been tighter than I thought! Excellent work there by Orsic! Submission of the night perhaps?

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:46 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Arm Triangle). Mate Orsic!
