PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Johnny Hogg (ranked 765 p4p, 1258 weight class) and Russ Simons (ranked 91 p4p, 151 weight class). Hogg comes to the cage accompanied by Styx - Renegade. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 9 - 4 - 1, fighting out of Amsterdam, Johnny Hogg!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 17 - 8 - 0, fighting out of London, Russ Simons!
The judges for this bout are Bruno Lombardi, Steve Montenegro and Joseph Jones.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Simons throws a nice looking combination but Hogg bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.
Hogg throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Simons throws an ugly left hook that misses

and Hogg counters with a single leg into guard. Simons didn't expect that.
Hogg has been talking about how he's improved his wrestling in the run up to the fight so let's see if that's enough to sway the balance.
Hogg trying to control the position from guard on top but Simons is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Simons utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Hogg wants to pass the guard but Simons is keeping the position.
Hogg throwing strikes but missing.

Hogg has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Simons preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.
Hogg throws a big elbow that misses.
Hogg throws a strike but Simons rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

Hogg looks to be working for a triangle here. Oh, it looks like he might have it! Simons has picked Hogg up and slammed him! Hogg can't keep hold of the triangle and Simons manages to pass to side control!
Hogg tries to improve position but can't.
Hogg sneaks back into half guard.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Hogg is looking to get back to full guard here but Simons has managed to pass to side control instead.
Simons content to control the pace. The referee will try and keep them active though.
Hogg tries to buck Simons off but Simons is having none of it.
Hogg manages to land a sweep and he's now on top! Lovely Jiu Jitsu!
Hogg misses with a head shot. Simons uses the momentum to regain guard.
Hogg wants to control from the top but Simons keeps moving.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Hogg throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Simons works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Hogg in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.

Hogg wants to control from the top but Simons keeps moving.

Simons is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Hogg looking to sit in guard and control but Simons gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.


That's four minutes gone in the round.

Hogg is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Simons is aware though and is defending well.
Hogg wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now.

Hogg slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Hogg bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Simons's guard.

Hogg lands a couple of digs.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Johnny Hogg dominated that round.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!

Simons tries to bum rush Hogg with a series of wild strikes but Hogg uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
Sloppy strikes from Simons. Those never looked like landing.
Russ Simons seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Simons walks into a jab.
Hogg scores with a punch to the gut of his opponent.
Simons moves away from the strike by Hogg.
Hogg swings for the body but Simons moves out of range.
Hogg throws a hard body shot but it just misses.

Hogg changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Simons looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
Simons felt the need to train up his defensive grappling in the buildup to the fight. Presumably he was expecting to be in a difficult position like this, so let's see if he can get out of it.
Simons is trying to get back to half guard.
Simons regains half guard, as Hogg was trying to land strikes.
Simons really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Hogg. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Hogg is scoring with some nice ground and pound from the dominant position.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Simons has hold of Hogg's hands but Hogg slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.
Hogg thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.
Hogg uses his free foot to push down on Simons's thigh. Eventually he works his other foot free and he's advanced to mount - this is trouble for Simons.

Hogg swings around for an armbar but it's a sloppy attempt and Simons is now in Hogg's guard. A big mistake from Hogg there, giving up the dominant position!

Hogg is looking for a triangle but Simons pushes his legs off easily.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Simons has a momentary lapse of concentration, allowing Hogg to throw up a leg and lock on what appears to be a pretty tight triangle! Simons is fighting it off but it's all too little too late - Hogg pulls down on the head and he's put Simons to sleep! This one is all over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:55 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Triangle). Johnny Hogg!
An out of breath Johnny Hogg thanked his loyal fans in his post fight interview, giving them credit for his success over the course of his career.
