Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 15 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Wanderlei Rua!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 12 - 8 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, John Wesley Hardin!
The judges for this bout are Hirohito Nitta, Tatsuya Matsuyama and Taro Takaoka.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
We've got one fighter who appears to only be looking to counter and the other not looking particularly aggressive either, so we could be in for a dull fight.
Hardin throws a shot from downtown. Rua moves away and avoids it.
Rua throwing a counter right hand but Hardin manages to avoid it.
A looping hook to the body misses from Hardin. Rua does a little dance to reset his feet.
Both fighters are looking to counter, which isn't making for the most exciting fight in the world.
Hardin takes a swing at Rua's ribcage but misses.
An attempted straight right counter from Rua misses the target.
Hardin misses with a shot to the body
and Rua counters with a low kick, right behind Hardin 's knee.
Rua on the receiving end of a decent leg kick there by Hardin. Hardin obviously looking to wear him down.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
The fighters circling - Hardin throws out the jab but it was never going to land.
Hardin misses with a kick to the body.
That's one minute gone in the round.
Hardin throws a body kick despite being completely out of range
and Rua counters with a stiff right hand.
John Wesley Hardin seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Hardin misses with a lunging right hand
and Rua makes the exchange count by landing a cracking kick to the body. Hardin really felt that one!
Rua has been working on his boxing with his coaches at Alpha Brasil in the buildup to the fight.
Rua takes a step back and watches a body kick go sailing past his mid section.
Rua is looking to counter with a body kick.
Hardin throws a head kick that half lands.
It looks like Wanderlei Rua has been cut.
Hardin throws a hook to the side of Rua's head but Rua sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.
A little feinted left hand from Rua on the counter but he doesn't commit to it.
Hardin connects with a jab.
That's two minutes gone in the round.
Hardin fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Rua manages to avoid it.
Rua was looking to counter that last move with a shot to the body but he didn't commit.
Hardin misses with a straight right.
Rua throws a quick counter kick to the body but Hardin avoids it.
Rua tries to move into range but Hardin moves to the side and lands with a nice right hand.
Hardin throws a body kick that misses.
Hardin throws a jab to the body, straight down the pipe. Boom. That sent Rua stumbling backwards but he manages to regain his composure quickly.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Hardin looks to throw a body kick
and Rua counters with a crisp one two that drops Hardin! Rua thinks about following him to the mat for a moment but instead steps back and waves Hardin to his feet! Hardin is in big trouble!
Hardin is rocked!
That's three minutes gone in the round.
Hardin throws a body kick, spinning off balance
and Rua counters with a beautiful right hand that knocks Hardin out cold! What a finish! Rua is going crazy, running around the mat, summersaulting off the corner posts and screaming into the cameras. Something tells me he's pretty happy!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:16 of round 1, we have a winner by way of KO (Punch). Wanderlei Rua!
An out of breath Wanderlei Rua thanked his loyal fans in his post fight interview, giving them credit for his success over the course of his career.
