PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Jim Babcock (ranked 97 p4p, 84 weight class) and Spider Monkey (ranked 14 p4p, 12 weight class). Babcock comes to the cage accompanied by San Francisco Live Medley. I don't know about you partner, but I'm pumped for this one!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 21 - 10 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Jim Babcock!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 27 - 15 - 1, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Spider Monkey!
The judges for this bout are Felipe Paraventi, Edson Gomes and Thiago Cunha.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Babcock misses with a hook. Monkey ducked under it nicely.
Monkey rushes in with a sloppy looking punch
and Babcock counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.
No luck for Babcock with that takedown attempt.
Monkey throws a hook to the side of Babcock's head but Babcock sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.
Monkey bobs and weaves and throws out a fast jab that snaps Babcock's head backwards.
Monkey rushes in with a sloppy looking punch
and Babcock cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.
Monkey misses with a kick to the body

and Babcock counters with a nice double leg into half guard.
Babcock throwing shots but Monkey is blocking nicely.
Monkey wants to control but Babcock is keeping busy.

Babcock looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Babcock trying to control the action but Monkey is working from the bottom.
Babcock is stalling here. Monkey is in no mood to hang around though. He's locked up a kimura from the bottom! Babcock seems to be keeping calm but he's forced to roll out of the hold and Monkey has ended up in side control on the top. Nice work.
Babcock is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard.

Babcock tries to get to full guard but Monkey has control of the leg.
Babcock is working hard here to advance position.
Babcock won't allow Monkey to pass to mount.
Babcock tries to roll over but Monkey keeps him under control.

Babcock is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Monkey seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.
Monkey trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Babcock wants to sweep but no luck.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Babcock not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
A telegraphed right hand from Monkey misses the target.
A head kick misses from Babcock.
Monkey rushes in with a sloppy looking punch
and Babcock counters with a stiff right hand.
Monkey scores with a reasonable looking shot to the body. Babcock doesn't seem bothered though.
Spider Monkey is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Monkey misses with an uppercut. Babcock saw that one coming.
A low kick from Monkey misses
and Babcock counters with a low kick, right behind Monkey 's knee.
A looping hook to the body misses from Monkey. Babcock does a little dance to reset his feet.
Babcock quickly followed up with a counter body kick but doesn't connect.
Monkey connects with a right hand. Babcock shakes it off.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Babcock ducks under a wild hook from Monkey.
The fighters are starting to get sweaty, which will make takedowns a bit more tricky.
Monkey throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Monkey throws a leg kick that is checked

and Babcock counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Babcock.
Babcock lands a couple of digs.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Jim Babcock dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.

Monkey chopped to the floor by a nice leg kick but he springs right back up before Babcock can pounce on him.
Monkey misses with a wild body shot.
Babcock looks to land a right hand but Monkey moved out of range.
Monkey buckles his opponent's knee momentarily with a nice leg kick.
Monkey scores with a decent looking hook.

It looks like Jim Babcock has been cut.
Babcock fakes with a right hand and throws a good leg kick, right into the thigh. That had to hurt Monkey.
Monkey missing with a left hand there. Babcock was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one.
Monkey scores with a slapping inside leg kick.
A low kick from Monkey is predictable there
and Babcock counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Babcock pivots, looking for a leg kick but Monkey is out of range and Babcock settles back down.
Ooooh, nice body kick lands from Monkey. Babcock shrugs it off though.
Monkey takes a nice looking leg kick right on the meat of his thigh there.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Monkey throws a jab but it's blocked by Babcock.

Monkey stuffs the takedown.
Jab, jab by Babcock - just one landing.
A low kick from Monkey misses

and Babcock counters with a single leg into guard. Monkey didn't expect that.
Babcock tries to free his leg and advance position but Monkey is retaining full guard.
Monkey looking to control.
Babcock postures up in Monkey's guard and throws a big left but Monkey blocks it.
Babcock throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.
Monkey wants to sweep here but Babcock controlling him for the moment.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Babcock sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Monkey's guard.
Monkey is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Monkey moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.

Monkey is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Babcock is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Monkey can do to turn this around?
Monkey keeping moving, preventing Babcock from controlling successfully.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Monkey bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Babcock's guard.

Babcock is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Monkey is staying active underneath Babcock, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
Babcock missing with the ground and pound from half guard.
Monkey keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.
Babcock stalling away here and it's allowed Monkey to slip out his trapped foot and regain full guard.
Monkey wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now.

Babcock working to pass to mount. He's got his hand pressing down on Monkey's thigh. Monkey counters though and makes it back to full guard.
Babcock throws an elbow that misses. Monkey uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Babcock's guard. Nice move by Monkey!

And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

The cut man is working on Jim Babcock's cut.
That's time! Babcock's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. This is the final round!

Monkey scores with a nice right hand.
Oooooooooooh, not good. A low kick from Babcock lands where it shouldn't have, right in the... well, you know what he did? He kicked him in the penis. He's injured, injured bad. The referee sends both fighters to their corners and Monkey has 5 minutes to recover. He's OK now though... a thumbs up from Monkey and we're back underway with a touch of gloves.
Babcock jabs Monkey right on the nose. Monkey blinks but takes it well.
Monkey lands a leg kick. The shin dug right into the meat of the thigh.
Monkey scores with the left hand. Babcock knows he should have avoided that one.
Monkey chopping away at his opponent's legs.

Monkey gets caught napping as Babcock dives in and scores a takedown. Monkey manages to retain guard.
Babcock stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Monkey swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Monkey is trying to keep Babcock in close.

Babcock being controlled here momentarily.
Babcock is working Monkey over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes.
Babcock content to strike from guard, landing some decent shots.
Monkey is trying to control the position but Babcock postures up.
Babcock postures up and lands some nice ground and pound.
Babcock pushes down on Monkey's leg and manages to get into half guard.
Babcock is looking for the mount but instead finds himself back in full guard.

Monkey can't keep his opponent in guard - Babcock advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.
Babcock frees up his trapped foot and advances to mount.
Babcock raining down hammerfists from mount.
Babcock sends his fist crashing into the mat - the crowd let out a collective ooooooh. Let's hope he's not broken it!
Poor strikes thrown by Babcock there. More accuracy and less frantic strikes would help!
Monkey regains half guard.
The fighters are battling for position here. Monkey manages to regain full guard. Nice work.

Babcock pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Monkey is keeping the position for now.
Babcock trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.
Babcock trying to control but Monkey is working from the bottom.
Babcock stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Monkey swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Monkey is controlling Babcock's posture.

Monkey wants to control position but Babcock is using a can opener to pass guard... He's turned it into a full on guillotine from mount now! Big trouble for Monkey here! He's turning a lovely shade of purple and yep! He's tapping out! I would say world class Jiu Jitsu but is it really? It was nice but let's not get silly about it.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:58 of round 3, we have a winner by way of Submission (Guillotine). Jim Babcock!
An out of breath Jim Babcock thanked his loyal fans in his post fight interview, giving them credit for his success over the course of his career.
