Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Sabas Mendiola (ranked 1617 p4p, 2048 weight class) and Dakota Reis (ranked 221 p4p, 281 weight class). Reis has chosen Cree Prayer Song - Young Spirit as his entrance music. Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of 8 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Sabas Mendiola! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of 6 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Dakota Reis! The judges for this bout are James Glass, James Atkins and Chris Edwards.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Reis with a nice looking leg kick. You could hear that one land in a back row.
Reis takes a jab on the nose there. A little bit of blood seems to be coming out. Hopefully that won't affect his breathing.

and Mendiola counters with a shoot takedown into half guard. Reis is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though. Mendiola missing with some ground and pound from the half guard. Reis regains full guard, whilst avoiding punches from Mendiola. Reis wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now. Reis controls Mendiola momentarily but Mendiola frees himself. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Reis looking to hit a scissor sweep but Mendiola is one step ahead there. Mendiola trying to control but Reis is working from the bottom.
That's one minute gone in the round. Mendiola throws a big elbow that misses. Mendiola with a flurry of punches that miss. Reis controlling the position. Mendiola looking to pass the guard. We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup. Mendiola postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect. Reis looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it. Mendiola rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Reis moves out of range and avoids them all easily. Mendiola lands with a two punch combination before moving back out of range.

Reis tries to close the distance and clinch up but Mendiola swats him away and circles back towards the center. Reis throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle. Reis throws a lazy right hand but Mendiola sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily. Reis throws a body punch but Mendiola moves out of range. Mendiola throws a hook to the side of Reis's head but Reis sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully. Reis tries to close the distance and clinch but Mendiola swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away. Reis throws a body kick that misses and Mendiola counters with a nice double leg into half guard. Mendiola throws a big elbow that misses, also allowing Reis to regain full guard. Mendiola with a flurry of punches that miss. Reis looking for a sweep. Not yet Reis, not yet. Mendiola makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Mendiola trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat. Mendiola chips away with some ground and pound. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Mendiola throwing strikes but missing. Reis avoiding any damage from the ground and pound. Reis manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Mendiola manages to get himself to full guard.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult. Mendiola looking to hit a scissor sweep but Reis is one step ahead there. Mendiola lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.

Sabas Mendiola dominated that round. That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. Mendiola misses the shot to the body. Mendiola takes a swing at Reis's ribcage but misses. Mendiola scores with a jab to the body. Reis throws a jab, cross combination which is slipped
and Mendiola counters with a takedown into side control! That could mean trouble for Reis! The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Reis can't do much from the bottom here. Mendiola postures up a little and throws a couple of hammerfists but they don't connect properly.

Mendiola throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land. Reis throws out a leg kick but Mendiola moves out of range and Reis only half commits. Reis wants to clinch. Mendiola lands with an overhand left. Reis wants to clinch up but Mendiola keeps it at a distance.
That's three minutes gone in the round. A jab from Reis misses. Sabas Mendiola is winning the standup battle so far. Mendiola steps to the side to avoid the strikes from Reis. Mendiola drops down looking for a counter takedown but Reis sprawls and moves away. Reis digs a good body shot into Mendiola's ribs. Reis misses with a hook to the body

That's four minutes gone in the round. Reis bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Mendiola's guard. Mendiola controlling the position. Mendiola trying to punch from his back but it's not doing any damage. Reis tries to free his leg and advance position but Mendiola is retaining full guard. Mendiola lands with a heel strike from the guard.

Reis ducks right into an uppercut from Mendiola. Mendiola closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard. Sabas Mendiola overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far. Reis is looking to control Mendiola's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Reis avoid being mounted? Reis blocking the ground and pound attempt from Mendiola. Mendiola drops an elbow to the side of Reis's head. Mendiola is trying to control. Reis wants to improve his position but can't escape this time. Reis avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Mendiola. He's now in Mendiola's guard. Nice move by Reis! Mendiola looking to sweep here. No luck so far. Reis wants to control from the top but Mendiola keeps moving. Reis won't allow Mendiola to sweep him here. Reis trying to control the position from guard on top but Mendiola is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet. Mendiola looking to control the pace of the fight rather than finish it.
The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. Dakota Reis seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Reis wants to control but Mendiola postures up. Sabas Mendiola is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach. Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! Mendiola lands a nice forearm strike.
And that's the end of the fight! Sabas Mendiola showed his dominance in that final round. Well Mendiola has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
