Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Paul Nichols (ranked 1790 p4p, 1752 weight class) and James Howlett (ranked 181 p4p, 177 weight class). The crowd seem to be enjoying Howlett's choice of entrance music: Indestructible. Rumors backstage are that the fighters have been paid to keep it standing but we know that would never happen in MMA!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of 14 - 8 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Paul Nichols! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of 14 - 11 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, James Howlett! The judges for this bout are Wagner Zegers, Radbod Blank and Albert Achterberg.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Howlett moves out of range of the body kick. Howlett is definitely looking for the counter takedowns here. Nichols wings a very wild body shot but it does the job and lands to the midsection. Nichols misses with an uppercut. Howlett saw that one coming. Nichols rushes Howlett and presses him up against the cage. Nichols's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does. Nichols does a little shimmy and throws a leg kick. The leg kick missed by a considerable margin though, making him look a little bit silly for doing the shimmy. Nichols looks to have improved his striking defense since last time we saw him fight. A head kick misses from Nichols. Howlett feints the counter takedown. Nichols tries to work over Howlett's front leg with a kick but Howlett checks it. Howlett fails with a takedown attempt. Nice shot by Nichols. Nichols tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Howlett was well out of range. Poor timing from Nichols. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Howlett walks straight into a jab right on the nose. That one stung - he's blinking and trying to clear his head. Paul Nichols seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Sloppy strikes from Nichols. Those never looked like landing. Nichols lands a nice shot that snaps Howlett's head back.
Howlett slips under a jab. Nichols throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Howlett. Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! Nichols throws a front kick aimed at Howlett's knee but Howlett avoids it well. Howlett takes a big uppercut there. He seems a bit wobbly but no, he's OK.
That's one minute gone in the round. Howlett feints and as Nichols raises his hands in defense, Howlett changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard. Howlett drops back looking for a leg! Nichols is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Nichols manages to kick Howlett off! Howlett jumps back into Nichols's guard. Howlett works a leg free and moves into half guard. Howlett is pressing down on Nichols's thigh, looking to free his foot. Nichols is holding on for now. Nichols knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Howlett on the ground. Howlett is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen. Howlett wants to lay and pray for a moment but Nichols keeps working.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Nichols is looking for a sweep. Howlett is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position. Howlett moves nicely into side control. Nichols is trying to get back to half guard. Nichols is looking to work his way out of this bad position but Howlett is controlling him well. Nichols is not content to let Howlett control the position. Nichols wants to get back to his feet but Howlett is dominant here and he's now got Nichols's back!
That's three minutes gone in the round. Howlett working for a RNC but it's not happening just yet. Howlett tightening his grip on Nichols, looking for the choke. Howlett working from the back looking to end the fight with a rear naked choke. Nichols is doing well to defend. Howlett seems to have got his hand under the chin though and he's sunk the choke in! Nichols is forced to tap and this one is over!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:38 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (RNC). James Howlett! James Howlett decided to thank the fans in attendance for making a great atmosphere. It seemed to go down pretty well.
