Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Mateo Hernandez (ranked 1007 p4p, 3324 weight class) and Jerry Hammerstein (ranked 96 p4p, 274 weight class). Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of 9 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Mateo Hernandez! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of 9 - 7 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Jerry Hammerstein! The judges for this bout are Hugh Johnson, Bruno Hogan and Steve Erwin.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Hammerstein avoids the body shot from Hernandez.
Hernandez tries to bum rush Hammerstein with a series of wild strikes but Hammerstein uses good footwork to avoid the assault. Hernandez misses with a hook. Hernandez gets caught napping as Hammerstein dives in and scores a takedown. Hernandez manages to retain guard. Hernandez tries to land a sweep but no joy. Hammerstein has gone for a leg lock! Hernandez slips out almost immediately though and dives into Hammerstein's guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Hammerstein keeping moving, preventing Hernandez from controlling successfully. Hammerstein has his foot on Hernandez's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Hernandez works his way back into a safe position though. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Hernandez pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Hammerstein is keeping the position for now. Hammerstein had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Hernandez defends it easily. Hammerstein looking to hit a scissor sweep but Hernandez is one step ahead there.

Hammerstein escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Hernandez gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance. Hammerstein working for a triangle but Hernandez defends it easily.

That's two minutes gone in the round. My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer. Hammerstein tries to get back to half guard but can't. Hammerstein looks to move to half guard but instead Hernandez has passed into mount! Damn! Hernandez looks to be in better condition than last time we saw him fight. Obviously he's been working hard on his cardio. Hammerstein working to try and regain half guard.

Hammerstein tries to land a sweep but no joy. Hammerstein wants to hit a sweep here but Hernandez passes into full mount! Oh no, disaster for Hammerstein there! Hammerstein manages to regain half guard. Good work. Hernandez is trying to control the action in half guard but Hammerstein is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out! Hernandez content to sit in half guard and control for a moment. Hammerstein actively working from the bottom here. And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.
A close round but Jerry Hammerstein will probably get the nod. The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! Hammerstein shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Hernandez as he jumps to the side. Hammerstein steps to the side to avoid the strikes from Hernandez. Hernandez misses with a double jab.
Hernandez comes forward and lands a shot to the body, then darts back out of range. Hernandez displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Hammerstein. Hammerstein wants to clinch. Hammerstein is looking to clinch. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Hammerstein shoots in but doesn't get the takedown and Hernandez counters with a quick right hand to the jaw. Mateo Hernandez has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Jerry Hammerstein. Hernandez throws a body shot but no joy. Hernandez throws a body shot but no joy. Hammerstein feints the counter takedown. Hammerstein blocks a jab. Hammerstein's hands are dropping dangerously low here and Hernandez connects clean with a right hook that sends him down to one knee! Hammerstein scrambles back to his feet.

and Hammerstein counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground. Hammerstein is looking to work some ground and pound but Hernandez has wrist control. Hammerstein throws an elbow that misses. Hernandez uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Hammerstein's guard. Nice move by Hernandez!

Hernandez manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem. Hammerstein looking for submissions from the bottom but instead Hernandez passes into side control.

That's two minutes gone in the round. Hammerstein is persisting with the attempt to improve his position. Hammerstein tries to slip a leg under to move to half guard but Hernandez presses down on the leg and jumps into full mount! Hammerstein is wriggling around trying to escape.

That's three minutes gone in the round. Hernandez takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though. Hammerstein is working to get back to half guard.

Mateo Hernandez dominated that second round. That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. This is the final round! Hernandez feints a straight left to the body, then turns around with a flashy move and hits Hammersteins jaw with a dramatic spinning back fist! Jerry Hammerstein is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things. Hammerstein feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position. Hammerstein slips nicely into half guard. Hernandez tries to roll over but Hammerstein keeps him under control. Hammerstein not landing any meaningful shots this time. Hammerstein is working for a submission of some sort.

Oh, it looks like he might have it! Hernandez has picked Hammerstein up and slammed him! Hammerstein can't keep hold of the triangle and Hernandez manages to pass to side control! Hammerstein is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard. Hammerstein tries to get to full guard but Hernandez has control of the leg. Hammerstein trying to get back to full guard but Hernandez takes advantage of the position and moves to full mount! Hammerstein is trying desperately to improve position. Hammerstein gets back to half guard.

Hammerstein gets full guard. Hammerstein looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.

Hammerstein takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired. Hernandez performing his best blanket impression for a moment. Jerry Hammerstein has got the better of the ground game so far.

Hernandez moves into side control, avoiding a weak kimura attempt from Hammerstein. Hernandez takes a little break here. Hammerstein wants to take advantage but he is being controlled well. Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out! Hernandez tries to get to his feet but he's trapped momentarily.
And that's the end of the fight! That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Mateo Hernandez. Well Hernandez has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win...
