PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Kawainui Perry (ranked 67 p4p, 141 weight class) and Tim Bird (ranked 10 p4p, 21 weight class). Bird has chosen Dragula - Rob Zombie as his entrance music. I'm sure you'll be fascinated to know that I was talking to some pointless Z list celebrity before the fight and he thought that Tim Bird was going to win. Let's see if he was right.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the welterweight championship of the world!
Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 12 - 2 - 1, fighting out of Los Angeles, Kawainui Perry!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 12 - 5 - 0, fighting out of London, Tim Bird!
The judges for this bout are Roger Salmon, Josh West and Ryoma Takatsuka.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Perry displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Bird throws out the jab.
Nice shot by Bird.
Perry lands with a thumping leg kick.
Perry looking to take his opponent's legs away with the low kicks.
Bird closes the distance but Perry moves to the side
and Perry counters with a nice uppercut.
Bird ducks low and lands a nice hook to the body of his opponent.
Perry takes a punch right to his stomach. That took the wind out of him momentarily.
Bird throws a body punch but Perry moves out of range.
Bird bobs and weaves and throws out a fast jab that snaps Perry's head backwards.
Bird swings for the body but Perry moves out of range.
Perry feints and then cracks Bird's leading leg with a nice low kick. He's obviously looking to slow Bird down.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Perry takes one on the chin but seems OK.

Good exchange - Bird coming out on top.
Bird tries to clinch up.

Bird closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Perry to the mat! Perry manages to get full guard.
Bird is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.

Bird working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.
Perry is controlling Bird's posture.
Bird is looking to work some ground and pound but Perry has wrist control.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Perry steps to the side to avoid the strikes from Bird.
Bird fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Perry manages to avoid it.
Perry misses with a kick to the body.
Tim Bird seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Perry throws the kick towards the body but Bird avoids it.
Perry throws a body kick that misses.
Bird avoids a kick to the body.

Bird scores with a jab to the jaw.
Bird throws a lazy right hand but Perry sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily.
A slow jab from Bird misses its intended target.
Kawainui Perry is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Bird fakes a head punch and goes low to the body. Nicely done.
Bird closes the distance but Perry moves to the side
and Perry counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.
Bird scores with a punch to the gut of his opponent.
Bird missing with a left hand there. Perry was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one.

It appears Perry was looking to counter with a kick there.
A looping hook to the body misses from Bird. Perry does a little dance to reset his feet.

and Perry counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.
Bird misses with a takedown
and Perry counters with a lovely straight right hand!
Perry avoids a punch combination nicely.

The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Bird throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land.
Perry scores with a sloppy right hand. Bird should have avoided that one.
Perry takes a jab right on the kisser.
Bird shoots for a double leg takedown but Perry sprawls well. He's pushed Bird's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Bird does a little shimmy and throws a leg kick. The leg kick missed by a considerable margin though, making him look a little bit silly for doing the shimmy.

Perry misses with a body punch.
Perry tries to work over Bird's body with a swooping hook but it only glances the target.
A short body shot lands from Perry as the two fighters clinch.

Bird's head jolts backwards as he takes an uppercut right on the button!
Perry misses with a hook to the ribs.
Perry tries to land a shot to the body but it's blocked.
Perry lands with a good tight uppercut to the head.
Perry lands a body punch - he's looking to wear down Bird.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Tim Bird dominated that round.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!

Perry lands a right hook to the body.
Perry misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Bird.
Bird swings away with a counter right hand but no contact made.
Perry connects with a lovely jab that went straight through the gap between Bird's hands.
A swing and a miss from Bird.
Bird will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.

Perry lands a nice shot that snaps Bird's head back.
It looks like Perry has been trying to sharpen up his punching technique, as it looks crisper than last time we saw him.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Bird tries to close the distance and clinch up but Perry swats him away and circles back towards the center.
Bird throws a looping overhand right but Perry ducks down to avoid it.
Perry drops his hands momentarily and Bird takes advantage with a crisp shot to the head.
Crunch! Perry slams his shin into Bird's torso.
Bird lands a beauty of a right hand that gets the crowd cheering.

Perry shakes his hands off, looking to compose himself, but takes a jab to the jaw whilst he does it.
Perry throws a leg kick which misses Bird's front leg but catches the back leg as Bird tries to avoid it.
Perry throws a leg kick but Bird sees it coming and checks it nicely.
Bird throws out a loose jab but Perry uses good head movement to avoid it.
Bird lands with a cross to side of his opponent's head.
Bird connects with a looping left hand that seems like it dazed Perry momentarily.

Perry lands a big head kick that sends Bird tumbling to the mat! Perry takes a step backwards and waves Bird back to his feet - he wants the finish!
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

and Perry counters nicely by changing levels and landing a hook to the body.
Perry moves out of range as Bird strikes.

That kick from Perry tenderised Bird's leg. Bird is trying to keep his angry face on.

Bird moves his head to the side to avoid a jab but walks straight into a cross.

Bird clobbers Perry with an overhand right that has the crowd gasping. That made a horrendous noise.

Bird swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target.
Perry is looking to slow Bird down with leg kicks.
Perry throws a good cross that connects.
Bird wants to clinch up but Perry keeps it at a distance.

Bird tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.

Perry looks to land a left hand but Bird moved out of range nicely.
Perry's hands are dropping dangerously low here and Bird connects clean with a right hook that sends him down to one knee! Perry scrambles back to his feet.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

The crowd applaud the fighters' efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Bird lands a really nice looking cross but Perry seems unphased.

The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

and Perry counters with a nice right hand that sends Bird toppling to the canvas! Bird scrambles and gets back to his feet - can Perry finish him?!
Bird throws a jab, cross combination which is slipped
and Perry counters with a huge left! Bird is in big trouble! He's backing up but Perry isn't giving him chance to recover. Under a barage of punches the ref has to step in to save Bird from any more damage. A dominating finish by Perry!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:20 of round 3, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Kawainui Perry!

An out of breath Kawainui Perry thanked his loyal fans in his post fight interview, giving them credit for his success over the course of his career.
Tim Bird spoke after the fight, saying 'Thankyou to my opponent for the scrap. Respect!'.
