PBP Commentary |
Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Davis Chang (ranked 3634 p4p, 1570 weight class) and Rick Ness (ranked 405 p4p, 197 weight class). Ness has chosen Cocaine as his entrance music. I can't wait for this one - let's get the fighter introductions out of the way and get this one started!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of 6 - 7 - 0, fighting out of New York, Davis Chang! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of 5 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Rick Ness! The judges for this bout are Sosuke Kotani, Kenichi Hosakawa and Taro Takaoka.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Nice sprawl there from Ness as Chang shoots in. Ness shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Chang sprawls well. Chang wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Ness gets slowly back to his feet. Ness closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Chang to the mat! Chang manages to get full guard. Chang has improved his flexibility recently so we will have to see if he can use that to his advantage. Ness showing good wrestling skills to control the position. Ness wants to control from the top but Chang keeps moving. Chang wants to sweep but no luck. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Ness is sitting in guard, working some ground and pound. Chang is looking to stand up but Ness isn't so interested in that idea. Ness looks more muscular than last time we saw him. He must have been on the weights. Ness trying to control the position from guard on top but Chang is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Ness trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.
That's one minute gone in the round. Ness is working Chang over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes. Ness stops Chang from standing up. Ness is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions. Chang controls Ness momentarily but Ness frees himself. The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet. Chang wants to stand but Ness is controlling the position.
The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. Horrible takedown attempt by Ness or perhaps it was just good defense by Chang, which made it look bad. Chang shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Ness but Ness pushes him off and we're back to square one.
That's two minutes gone in the round. There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action. Ness gets a double leg takedown into Chang's guard. Ness makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard. Ness trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat. Ness throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Chang works some decent striking defense from the bottom. Ness throws a strike but Chang rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top. Ness is pulling down on Chang's head. It's preventing any offense from Chang, at least for the moment. Ness looking for a sweep. Not yet Ness, not yet. Ness controlling the position. Chang tries to free his leg and advance position but Ness is retaining full guard. Chang is working hard here to advance position.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Ness has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall. Ness wants to sweep here but Chang controlling him for the moment. There's a bit of a scramble here and now Ness is on top in guard.
Chang is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move. Ness is pressing down on Chang's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it. Ness looking for a sweep. Not yet Ness, not yet. Chang pushes down on Ness's leg and manages to get into half guard.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Ness is trying to get back to full guard. Chang is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there. Chang is keen to just control but Ness is a slippery customer. Chang is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
Ness keeps control of the position for the meantime. The crowd thankful this round is nearly over. Chang is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.
A close round but Rick Ness will probably get the nod. The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare each other down, ready to get back to the action. Ness looks for a takedown but Chang sprawls well. Chang stuffs the takedown. A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Ness. Davis Chang has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Rick Ness. Ness throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Chang tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Ness is in Chang's guard. Chang has control of Ness's left arm, preventing Ness from doing any damage. A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Ness accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand. Chang not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Ness throws a sloppy strike and Chang has hooked up an armbar on the loose arm! He's turned and extended fully! Ness is forced to tap! Great BJJ from Chang!
