PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Julian Bashir (ranked 430 p4p, 1027 weight class) and Ibasour Sershurrapal (ranked 37 p4p, 77 weight class). Bashir comes to the cage accompanied by Exodus - The Toxic Waltz. Sershurrapal has chosen Smoking Snakes as his entrance music. Ibasour Sershurrapal told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 18 - 9 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Julian Bashir!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 19 - 12 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Ibasour Sershurrapal!
The judges for this bout are Matheus Silva, Leandro Rodrigues and Daniel Cesar.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Bashir gets tackled into the cage by Sershurrapal. Sershurrapal maintains the clinch.
A short right from Sershurrapal on the inside.
Sershurrapal lands with a light punch inside.
Bashir lands with a short punch from the clinch.
Bashir lands with a quick shot inside that doesn't really do much damage.
Sershurrapal throws a punch but it's blocked by Bashir.
Sershurrapal misses with a hook from the clinch.
Sershurrapal is looking for a takedown up against the cage. Bashir gets underhooks though and prevents the takedown attempt.
Sershurrapal lands a left hand that snaps the head of Bashir backwards.
Nice body punch from Bashir - that landed with a thud.

Bashir's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Bashir thows a left - swing and a miss!
Sershurrapal doesn't manage to clinch there - Bashir circles away.
Bashir was looking to counter that last move with a shot to the body but he didn't commit.
Bashir misses with a straight right.
Sershurrapal tries to clinch up but Bashir circles away and keeps his distance.
Bashir feinted with a counter takedown.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Bashir swats away the attempt to clinch by Sershurrapal.
Bashir is moving around nicely and scores here with a single head shot.

Sershurrapal tries to close the distance and clinch up but Bashir swats him away and circles back towards the center.

Sershurrapal dives in and grabs Bashir's left leg, looking for a takedown. Bashir pushes down on Sershurrapal's head and hops out.
Bashir was looking to counter that move with a punch but didn't quite pull the trigger.
Sershurrapal tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
The fight stays on the outside here - Sershurrapal looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Bashir connects with a body shot that sends Sershurrapal's belly button to the back.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Sershurrapal moves into range and clinches up with Bashir.
I was talking to Bashir's coach per-fight and he was telling me that they'd been working on the clinch in the runup to this fight.

Sershurrapal lands a nice trip takedown into half guard.
Bashir is trying to control but can't.
Bashir is refusing to be controlled, as Sershurrapal sits in half guard.

Sershurrapal seems to be working for a kimura but Bashir defends the submission attempt.
Bashir is trying to get back to full guard.

Sershurrapal is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.

Sershurrapal trying to control from Bashir's half guard. Bashir has other ideas though and has regained full guard.
Sershurrapal is looking to work some ground and pound but Bashir has wrist control.
Bashir has Sershurrapal pulled in close to control his posture.

Bashir working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Sershurrapal doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Sershurrapal manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Sershurrapal throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Bashir works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Bashir is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by Sershurrapal.

The fight moves into the clinch position.
Sershurrapal misses with a hook from the clinch.

Sershurrapal has clasped his hands together around Bashir's back... aaand, he's got a takedown into side control. Nicely done.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Sershurrapal lands a big shot. The thud that echoes around the arena is like music to the fans' ears.

Bashir moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.
Bashir seems keen to control Sershurrapal's posture.
Sershurrapal throws a big elbow that misses.

Bashir has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Sershurrapal can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Bashir controls Sershurrapal momentarily but Sershurrapal frees himself.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Sershurrapal passes Bashir's right leg, so he's now in half guard.
Bashir gets full guard.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Bashir is on top in guard.

Bashir stands up over Sershurrapal, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.
Bashir is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Sershurrapal can do to turn this around?

Ibasour Sershurrapal has got the better of the ground game so far.

Sershurrapal gets the body lock takedown. After a quick scramble, Bashir regains guard.

Bashir is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Sershurrapal manages to get to full guard.
Sershurrapal has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall.
Bashir wants to control from the top but Sershurrapal keeps moving.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Ibasour Sershurrapal showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare each other down, ready to get back to the action. This is the final round!

Sershurrapal swings wildly with an uppercut but Bashir uses good head movement to avoid it.
Bashir tries to land a shot to the body but it's blocked.
Sershurrapal throws a punch but it's blocked by Bashir.
Sershurrapal is working on a leg, looking for a takedown but Bashir is defending well.
Bashir is trying to break free.

Sershurrapal gets the body lock takedown. After a quick scramble, Bashir regains guard.

Bashir has managed to work for a loose triangle. I think Sershurrapal should be able to defend this one pretty easily though. Oh, Bashir has tightened it up now! Sershurrapal should have reacted faster there - he's in big trouble and yes, he's tapped out! This one is all over!
