Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between James Leary (ranked 785 p4p, 672 weight class) and Katashi Takehiko (ranked 71 p4p, 60 weight class). James Leary has the better chin. Will he look to stand and bang today?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the bantamweight championship of the world! Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of 9 - 1 - 0, fighting out of London, James Leary! And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of 5 - 0 - 1, fighting out of Montreal, Katashi Takehiko! The judges for this bout are Kenichi Hosakawa, Hirohito Nitta and Yukihiro Shimada.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Takehiko slips in close and lands a nice hook before moving back out of range. Leary on the wrong end of a nice jab. Takehiko lands a nice hook to Leary's body. Leary takes it in his stride and looks to land his own strikes. Takehiko misses with a lunging right hand
and Leary counters with a nice uppercut. Takehiko tries to clinch up but Leary circles away and keeps his distance. A counter left hand to the body from Leary misses its target. Leary on the receiving end of a decent leg kick there by Takehiko. Takehiko obviously looking to wear him down.
Takehiko tries to clinch up and Leary counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.
Takehiko is rocked! Takehiko scores with a punch to the head. Takehiko lands an overhand right.
That's one minute gone in the round. Takehiko stooping low to avoid any incoming strikes and then lunges in with an uppercut come cross that lands flush. Takehiko connects with a right hand. Leary shakes it off. Takehiko tries to clinch but fails miserably and Leary counters with a nice jab to the body that keeps Takehiko thinking. Nice cross by Takehiko. Leary throws an overhand right that lands on Takehiko's shoulder, as Takehiko tries to avoid the shot. Leary has his head snapped back a nice jab. A little nod from Leary there as he acknowledges the shot. Takehiko tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion. Leary's hands are dropping dangerously low here and Takehiko connects clean with a right hook that sends him down to one knee! Leary scrambles back to his feet. Takehiko misses with a hook to the body
and Leary counters with a nice uppercut.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Leary takes a shot to the nose. Hopefully that hasn't broken it. Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! A solid leg kick lands there for Takehiko.
Leary is looking light on his feet compared to last time was saw him fight. Leary misses with a lunging right hand
and Takehiko counters with a good low kick that Leary was not able to check. Takehiko cracks Leary with a right hand to the side of the head. Leary pushing out the jab but it's not landing. Takehiko is landing a lot of head punches in this opening round! Leary had better start moving his head a bit unless he wants his face to turn into mush. Leary circles away from the clinch attempt.
It looked like Leary wanted to counter with a hook but didn't fully commit. Takehiko throws a good cross that connects.
Takehiko with a nice calf kick. Leary takes a shot right to the liver - Bas would have been proud of that punch.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Takehiko rushes in with a sloppy looking punch
and Leary counters with a crisp one two that drops Takehiko! Leary thinks about following him to the mat for a moment but instead steps back and waves Takehiko to his feet! Takehiko is in big trouble! Takehiko is still on wobbly legs! Can Leary finish him? Takehiko tries to clinch there but Leary circles away.
Leary is looking for a counter combo. Takehiko has been working his punching technique in the buildup to the fight and it appears to be paying off. Takehiko fails with an attempt to clinch.
A little feinted left hand from Leary on the counter but he doesn't commit to it. Takehiko moves in looking to clinch but Leary pushes him off. Leary is looking to counter punch. Oh Takehiko is in trouble here! Leary follows up with more strikes and that's it! The ref has stopped it!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:30 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). James Leary! James Leary is the new bantamweight champion! James Leary was full of energy after the big win and talked about how he thinks he can do big things in this sport. The crowd were appreciative of his determination to succeed.
