Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the heavyweight championship of the world! Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
16 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Fidel Puno! And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
14 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Barack Lesnar! The judges for this bout are Stewart Dunkirk, Chris Downing and Daniel Franklin.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Lesnar avoids a punch combination nicely.
Lesnar shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Puno's guard. Lesnar preventing the sweep. Lesnar content to strike from guard, landing some decent shots. Puno utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound. Puno looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
Lesnar pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Puno is keeping the position for now. Puno trying to strike from the bottom but really, it's not the best position to be doing that from! Lesnar with a flurry of punches that miss. Puno looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
Lesnar throws a strike but Puno rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.
That's one minute gone in the round. Lesnar looking to sweep using the butterfly guard but Puno puts pay to that idea as he passes nicely into half guard. Lesnar tries to get to full guard but Puno has control of the leg. Lesnar is persisting with the attempt to improve his position. Puno trying to control from half guard but Lesnar is working away. Puno prevents Lesnar from improving his position. Lesnar trying to get back to full guard but Puno takes advantage of the position and moves to full mount! Lesnar flailing away with punches but nothing is landing.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so. Lesnar looking to escape from mount but he's given up his back! The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Lesnar tries to escape the position - he's now mounted. Is that better or worse? Hard to tell! Lesnar can't escape the position.
Lesnar tries to improve his position but instead Puno has taken his back! The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult. Lesnar is being controlled on the ground here - he must escape this position otherwise surely the end is near.
Puno looking for the rear naked choke. And he's got it! Lesnar taps!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:51 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (RNC). Fidel Puno! Fidel Puno retains his heavyweight title!
