PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Aleksandr Pushkin (ranked 306 p4p, 266 weight class) and Spider Monkey (ranked 39 p4p, 30 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 11 - 4 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Aleksandr Pushkin!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 33 - 21 - 2, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Spider Monkey!
The judges for this bout are Paulo Santos, Felipe Paraventi and Matheus Silva.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Horrible takedown attempt by Pushkin or perhaps it was just good defense by Monkey, which made it look bad.
Monkey takes a swing at Pushkin's ribcage but misses.

Monkey tries to keep at a distance but Pushkin has taken the fight into the clinch.
We've been hearing reports that Pushkin has been drilling takedowns in recent sessions so let's see if that has an impact on the result of this fight.
Pushkin jumps guard but Monkey turns him against the cage and keeps the fight standing.

Pushkin shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Monkey manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.

Monkey is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Pushkin defends well.
Hammerfist, elbow! yells Pushkin's corner. There ya go! There ya go!

Pushkin has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Monkey working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Pushkin doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Pushkin manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.

Monkey pivots, looking for a leg kick but Pushkin is out of range and Monkey settles back down.
Spider Monkey seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Monkey connects with a single shot there.
Pushkin shoots in for a double leg but Monkey sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.

Pushkin has Monkey up against the cage in a clinch.
Pushkin has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Monkey avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.

so Pushkin counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.

Monkey throws his legs up looking to secure a triangle. Oh, that looks pretty tight, I gotta say! Pushkin escapes and throws Monkey's legs to the side, diving into side control!

Pushkin tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Pushkin has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

Monkey is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Pushkin pulls his head out easily.

Pushkin wants to work for an arm triangle but Monkey is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
Pushkin frees up his trapped foot and advances to mount.
Monkey is controlling an arm, preventing Pushkin from taking his back. Although keeping him in mount is no better to be honest.
Pushkin works his way to his opponent's back.
Monkey trying to control but he's just got himself in more trouble.

Monkey looking to break Pushkin's wrist control so he can sink in the choke. Pushkin remaining controlled and patient though - he really has to keep calm otherwise Monkey will wrap this one up with the rear naked choke!

Pushkin drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Pushkin jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

Pushkin is pushing down on Monkey's leg trying to pass to half guard. Monkey is fighting to maintain full guard but Pushkin has managed to sneak the leg through.

Pushkin stands and throws Monkey's legs to the side, diving into side control.
Pushkin advances to mount.
Pushkin trying to control but he's not successful this time.

Pushkin wants to control the pace but Monkey is squirming around nicely.
Monkey tries to hold on but Pushkin postures up.

Monkey sneaks a leg back under and regains half guard and is working straight away to try and get back to guard. He hasn't managed just yet though.

Pushkin is working for a kimura but Monkey is defending it quite comfortably.

The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Monkey lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.


And that's the end of the fight!
Aleksandr Pushkin showed his dominance in that final round.
I think Pushkin has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
