PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Karl Kennedy (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Mikey Pepper (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Well, I have no idea who's going to take this one!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 6 - 5 - 0, fighting out of New York, Karl Kennedy!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 3 - 0, fighting out of New York, Mikey Pepper!
The judges for this bout are Russell Pearce, Steve Montenegro and Chad Campbell.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Pepper blocks a head kick by Kennedy.
Ooooh, nice body kick lands from Kennedy. Pepper shrugs it off though.
Pepper tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Kennedy swivels and escapes.
Pepper slips a jab and a cross from Kennedy.

Pepper tries to clinch but Kennedy moves out of range.
A right-left combo lands from Kennedy.
Nice sprawl there from Kennedy as Pepper shoots in.
Karl Kennedy has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Mikey Pepper.

Kennedy dances in quickly and lands a nice inside leg kick on Pepper. That did some damage!
Pepper shoots in and drives through. Kennedy sprawls well.
Pepper tries to clinch but Kennedy is having none of it.

Pepper tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Kennedy smiles and moves away.

Kennedy has taken the fight to the clinch.
Pepper managing to block the knees to the body from Kennedy.
Pepper fails to pull guard.
Pepper has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Kennedy is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.
Kennedy tries to land a knee to the head but Pepper blocks with his arms.

Kennedy is fighting off a takedown attempt but Pepper is just too persistent for him and manages to trip Kennedy to the mat. Kennedy regains guard as soon as the fighters hit the mat.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
Kennedy wants to stand but Pepper is controlling the position.
Pepper wants to control from the top but Kennedy keeps moving.
Pepper looking to sit in guard and control but Kennedy gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Pepper working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Kennedy doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Kennedy manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Pepper looks gassed!
Kennedy wants to stand but Pepper is controlling his posture from full guard.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Kennedy defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Pepper.
Pepper misses with a takedown attempt - Kennedy sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Pepper on the receiving end of a decent leg kick there by Kennedy. Kennedy obviously looking to wear him down.

Mikey Pepper seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Kennedy fails with an attempt to clinch.

Pepper gets the takedown into side control.
Kennedy pushes Pepper away and creates a bit of space to escape. He's almost out here... but no, Pepper gets a good hold of his legs and remains firmly in side control.
Pepper connects with a decent looking elbow from side control that caused Kennedy some visible discomfort.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Kennedy tries to escape but Pepper is in control.
Pepper tries to advance to mount but can't.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Pepper prevents Kennedy from escaping the position.

Pepper wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Kennedy, who protects the arm well.
Pepper sitting in side control, looking to soften his opponent up with elbows and hammerfists but Kennedy is avoiding damage well and looking to escape the position.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Kennedy fails in his attempt to clinch.
Pepper shoots for a takedown but Kennedy saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Kennedy moves into the clinch.
Kennedy tries a knee to the head but he's missed.
Kennedy has had enough of the clinch and is looking to separate.
Kennedy tries to throw a body punch but Pepper avoids it by throwing Kennedy back against the cage.
Kennedy with the Thai clinch. He's looking to land a big knee but he's not managed it this time.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Karl Kennedy dominated that round.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!



Pepper drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.
Kennedy wants to stand up but Pepper is controlling him.
Pepper trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.
Kennedy wants to stand and escape but Pepper is having none of it.
Kennedy has momentary wrist control but Pepper slips an elbow through the middle.
Pepper postures up in Kennedy's guard and throws a big left but Kennedy blocks it.

Kennedy wriggles free and stands up.

Pepper shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Kennedy is trying to defend but Pepper finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.
Kennedy pushes Pepper off looking to stand but Pepper dives back in and keeps control.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Pepper stands, ready to strike. The ref makes him back up and allows Kennedy to get to his feet.

Excellent takedown into side control there by Pepper.

Pepper is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Kennedy is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.
Kennedy is working hard to escape and get back to his feet. After a battle for position, Pepper asserts his dominance and retains side control.

Pepper tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Pepper has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

Pepper thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Kennedy is looking to work his way out of this bad position but Pepper is controlling him well.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Pepper shoots in but no luck this time.
Kennedy tries to clinch there but Pepper circles away.
Pepper shoots in but Kennedy avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Pepper shakes his hands off, looking to compose himself, but takes a jab to the jaw whilst he does it.

Kennedy pushes Pepper up against the cage in a clinch.
Pepper takes a knee to the side of the body.
Knees in the clinch landing for Kennedy.
Kennedy tries to land a knee to the head but Pepper blocks with his arms.
Pepper has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Kennedy avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.

Pepper doesn't do any damage with a couple of strikes from the bottom.
Pepper is trying to keep Kennedy in close.
Pepper has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

Kennedy stands up and waves to Pepper to follow him.

A telegraphed takedown attempt from Pepper is defended easily by Kennedy.

The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Pepper closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Kennedy did well to prevent Pepper getting side control.

Pepper shoots in looking for a takedown. Kennedy tries to sprawl out of it but Pepper keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Kennedy manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Karl Kennedy will probably get the nod.
Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin! This is the final round!



Kennedy gets to the clinch - let's see what his plan is here.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

Pepper is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Kennedy knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.

and he gets countered with a snapping leg kick.

Kennedy has managed to clinch.
Pepper on the defensive, avoiding the knees to the body.
Pepper blocks a knee to the body. He'll have a nicely bruised forearm in the morning.
Pepper goes for a takedown in the clinch but Kennedy prevents it.
Pepper tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Kennedy smiles and moves away.
Horrible takedown by Pepper or perhaps it was just good defense by Kennedy which made him look bad.

Kennedy thuds a mid kick into his opponent's body. That will wear on Pepper if he has to take too many more of those.

Pepper tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Kennedy swivels and escapes.
Kennedy leaves Pepper with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Kennedy moves into range and lands a nice leg kick.

Pepper throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Kennedy's waist but Kennedy gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Pepper off to one side.

Kennedy scores to the head and body with a nice combination!
Pepper shoots in for a takedown but Kennedy shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
Kennedy clobbers Pepper with an overhand right that has the crowd gasping. That made a horrendous noise.
Pepper takes a head kick and shrugs it off.
A solid leg kick lands there for Kennedy.
Karl Kennedy is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

Pepper takes the fight into the clinch.
Kennedy lands a knee to the head there! That was nasty!
Pepper tries for a takedown but Kennedy manages to get underhooks.
Kennedy tries to land a knee to the head but misses.
A frustrated look appears on Kennedy's face as he tries to break the clinch.
Kennedy using the Thai plumb to throw knees but Pepper has his back arched nicely, preventing the strike.

Pepper goes for a takedown attempt but Kennedy pushes him away and we're back to fighting at a distance.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

And that's the end of the fight!
Karl Kennedy showed his dominance in that final round.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Kennedy, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
