Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the middleweight championship of the world! Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
17 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Mar Vell! And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
15 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Georges St Pierre! The judges for this bout are Daniel Cesar, Thiago Cunha and Edson Gomes.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Some bone on bone action there as St Pierre checks a low kick. Luckily it wasn't a particularly hard one. Vell lands with a thumping leg kick.
Vell connects with a leg kick. St Pierre looked like he was expecting something else and didn't defend it. Vell tries a switch kick but it misses it's target. Nice shot lands for Vell. St Pierre shoots in for a takedown but Vell shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet. St Pierre chopped to the floor by a nice leg kick but he springs right back up before Vell can pounce on him.
Vell misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from St Pierre.
St Pierre tries a head kick but it misses.
Vell comes forward and lands a shot to the body, then darts back out of range. Vell is looking to chop away at St Pierre's legs.
That's one minute gone in the round. St Pierre takes one to the side of the head.
St Pierre keeping his hands up high there, blocking the jab from Vell. Jab, jab by Vell - just one landing. St Pierre shoots in but Vell avoids the takedown attempt easily. Vell lands with a nice low kick. That'll leave a bruise. Vell tries to land a leg kick but St Pierre saw it coming and moves away.
Vell connects with a leg kick. St Pierre looked like he was expecting something else and didn't defend it. Mar Vell is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs. The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so! Vell throws a body kick that sends a sickening thudding noise reverberating around the arena.
That's two minutes gone in the round. A head kick misses from St Pierre. Nice jab there from Vell. Mar Vell seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. St Pierre walks straight into an uppercut. Luckily it didn't land flush. Vell lands a really nice looking cross but St Pierre seems unphased.
St Pierre is rocked! St Pierre takes a shot right to the bread basket. Vell dips down and scores with a jab to the body. St Pierre looks winded! Vell explodes with a nice body kick and back out of range. Nice work. St Pierre walks into a stiff left hand from Vell. Vell scores with a jab to the body. Vell lands an uppercut out of nowhere! St Pierre falls backwards - clearly groggy! Vell dives in and finishes the fight with more strikes for a TKO finish!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:58 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Mar Vell! Mar Vell retains his middleweight title! Mar Vell decided to thank the fans in attendance for making a great atmosphere. It seemed to go down pretty well.
