Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
4 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Sam Wilson! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
4 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Tamati Ngata! The judges for this bout are Paulsen Ambrosius, Daniel Blasius and Saam Ante.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Ngata scores with a crisp jab that stopped Wilson in his tracks. Wilson lands a head kick. Ngata smiles back at him and beckons him forward. Wilson misses with a kick to the body.
Wilson on the wrong end of an overhand right that came out of nowhere. Ngata connects with a looping right hand.
Nice cross by Ngata. Ngata is moving around nicely and scores here with a single head shot. Ngata throws a jab but it's blocked by Wilson. Wilson just misses with a punch to the body.
A looping hook to the body misses from Ngata. Wilson does a little dance to reset his feet. Ngata throws a hook but Wilson blocks it. Ngata throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land. Wilson takes one on the chin but keeps coming.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Wilson misses the shot to the body.
That's one minute gone in the round. Wilson throws a lazy right hand but Ngata sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily. Ngata avoids the head kick by Wilson.
Ngata sees a low kick coming and goes to check it, but it's actually a body kick and it thuds into his unprotected ribs. A big left from Ngata misses. Wilson thinks about countering with a body kick. Ngata swings and misses with a hook to the body.
Wilson wants to take advantage of his opponent's missed offense by moving into the clinch. Ngata throws a looping overhand right but Wilson ducks down to avoid it. Wilson takes a shot right to the liver - Bas would have been proud of that punch. Wilson avoids the body shot from Ngata.
Wilson thinks about countering with a head kick. Ngata connects with a right hand. Wilson shakes it off. Wilson defending well as Ngata loads up on a big left hand. Ngata clobbers Wilson with an overhand right that has the crowd gasping. That made a horrendous noise.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Ngata misses with a looping left. Ngata checks a leg kick nicely. Wilson connects with a crisp jab. Good shot there by Ngata. Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Ngata pushing out the jab but it's not landing. Wilson was looking to counter that move with a punch but didn't quite pull the trigger. Tamati Ngata seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Wilson takes a big uppercut there. He seems a bit wobbly but no, he's OK.
Ngata shoots in but Wilson avoids the takedown attempt easily. The crowd cheers as Ngata lands an impressive looking overhand right. Wilson doesn't seem phased though. Ngata takes a swing at Wilson's ribcage but misses. Wilson throws a quick counter head kick but Ngata was just out of range. Ngata throws out a loose jab but Wilson uses good head movement to avoid it.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Wilson drops his hands momentarily and Ngata takes advantage with a crisp shot to the head. Wilson takes a shot right to the liver - Bas would have been proud of that punch. Ngata is using his reach advantage to land shots from outside his opponent's range. Ngata stooping low to avoid any incoming strikes and then lunges in with an uppercut come cross that lands flush. Wilson moves away from the strike by Ngata. Wilson is looking to counter the offense by Ngata and move into the clinch. Ngata ducks down and throws a hook to the body. Ngata is landing a lot of head punches in this opening round! Wilson had better start moving his head a bit unless he wants his face to turn into pâté. A telegraphed right hand from Ngata misses the target. Wilson appeared to be looking to counter that last move with a leg kick. Ngata scores with a jab to the head.
Wilson needs to keep his hands up - Ngata had a free shot at his head there. Ngata looks to throw the jab but Wilson is out of range. Wilson stuffs the takedown attempt from Ngata. Ngata gets slowly back to his feet.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Ngata blocks a head kick by Wilson.
Ngata thuds his right hand into Wilson's forehead from close range. That could be painful for both fighters. The crowd are loving this. Great action here. Sloppy strikes from Ngata. Those never looked like landing. Wilson seemed to be looking to counter by closing the distance. Ngata lunges at Wilson with a hook that half lands and is half blocked by Wilson's hand. Ngata pushes forward with a 1-2 combination that forces Wilson back to the cage. Ngata follows up with a solid lead hook to the liver. Ngata swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target. Wilson throws the kick towards the body but Ngata avoids it. A big left from Ngata misses. It looked like Wilson wanted to counter with a hook but didn't fully commit. Ngata connects with a single shot there. Wilson moves out of range as Ngata strikes. Ngata drops Wilson with a left right combo! Ngata follows him down to the ground into side control.
Wilson is rocked! And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Tamati Ngata dominated that round. The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.
