PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Jericho Hill (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Dave Spiteri (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Spiteri is bobbing his head along to his entrance song: AC/DC -TNT. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 12 - 4 - 1, fighting out of Montreal, Jericho Hill!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 22 - 10 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Dave Spiteri!
The judges for this bout are William Gold, Paul Tew and Sam Margolis.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Hill paws at his opponent with the jab and then lunges in with a straight, right on the button.
Spiteri has a takedown stuffed.
Hill takes an uppercut right on the button but keeps his composure.
Spiteri throws a leg kick but Hill sees it coming and moves out of range.
Hill has been talking about how he's improved his wrestling in the run up to the fight so let's see if that's enough to sway the balance.
Hill throws a front kick that sends Spiteri stumbling back into the cage.
Hill takes a shot right to the bread basket.
Hill tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Spiteri manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Hill swings wildly with a hook that is half blocked by Spiteri.
Hill throws an off balance right hand
and Spiteri counters nicely by changing levels and landing a hook to the body.
Spiteri scores with a nice strike.
Dave Spiteri seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Spiteri moves away from the strike by Hill.

Spiteri feints and as Hill raises his hands in defense, Spiteri changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
In the pre-fight buildup videos we saw Spiteri working his ground and pound in the gym. He isn't landing a great percentage of his ground strikes so far though.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Spiteri throws a strike but Hill rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

Spiteri is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Hill is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Spiteri's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Spiteri's back!

Hill connects with a series of strikes and the referee is calling for Spiteri to escape the position.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Hill is hanging on to Spiteri's back as he tries to escape.
Spiteri is keeping busy.
Hill is trying to stick to Spiteri's back but Spiteri is turning into Hill. He's managed to reverse the position - now he's in Hill's guard. Polite applause from the crowd in appreciation of some nice Jiu Jitsu by Spiteri.

Spiteri passes Hill's left leg - he's now in half guard.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Hill is refusing to be controlled, as Spiteri sits in half guard.
Spiteri looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.

Spiteri is working hard to pass the guard. He's done it - he's now in full mount! Trouble for Hill!
Spiteri lands a couple of good shots and Hill has given up his back, trying to escape the position!
So, who will make the next big move? In this position it could be crucial.
Hill can't escape the position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Dave Spiteri will probably get the nod.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!

and Hill takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.
Spiteri misses with a right hand
and Hill counters with a nice body shot.
Hill keeping his hands up high there, blocking the jab from Spiteri.
Hill connects with a body shot that sends Spiteri's belly button to the back.
Hill bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes.
Hill on the wrong end of a vicious looking body shot.
A left lands for Hill.
Spiteri tries to land a leg kick but Hill saw it coming and moves away.
Hill lands a leg kick that knocks Spiteri off balance momentarily.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Hill enables Spiteri to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Hill manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Hill utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Hill not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Spiteri trying to control but Hill is working from the bottom.
Hill wants to sweep here but Spiteri controlling him for the moment.

Spiteri controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
Hill is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Spiteri has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

Spiteri is controlling Hill's trapped leg to prevent Hill from advancing to side control.

Spiteri keeps control of the position for the meantime.
Hill looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Spiteri with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.
Hill is taking a breather. Spiteri says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.
Hill seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Spiteri does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
Spiteri looks like he's trying to stand up.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Spiteri swings and misses with a hook to the body.
Spiteri misses the jab.
Hill cracks the inside of Spiteri's front leg.
A combination from Spiteri does no damage.
Hill on the wrong end of a nice hook.
Hill displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Spiteri throws out the jab.
Hill throws a head kick that misses.
And an attempted straight right on the counter from Spiteri! But no joy.
Hill lands with a cross.

Spiteri shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Hill's guard.

Hill wants to sweep here but Spiteri controlling him for the moment.

A close second round but Dave Spiteri will probably get the nod - 10:9.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. This is the final round!


Hill throws a body kick that misses.
Spiteri throws out a loose jab but Hill uses good head movement to avoid it.
Hill has his front leg slapped to the side - a nice low kick landing there from Spiteri.

Spiteri ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Hill moves away.
Spiteri ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face.
Spiteri looks to land a combination. Hill sees it coming but can only parry a couple of the shots.

Spiteri fakes a head punch and goes low to the body. Nicely done.

Hill throws a leg kick which misses Spiteri's front leg but catches the back leg as Spiteri tries to avoid it.

Spiteri misses with an uppercut. Hill saw that one coming.
A decent looking body kick lands there for Hill.

Spiteri connects with a single shot there.
Hill connects with a leg kick. He turned his hip over nicely there.
Crunch! Hill slams his shin into Spiteri's torso.

Thud! ouch! good body kick from Hill - that will leave a mark!
Spiteri takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Spiteri misses with a lunging right hand
and Hill counters with a kick to the head that grazes his opponent. Spiteri is lucky that one didn't land flush.
Hill tries to score with an inside leg kick but telegraphs it and Spiteri is able to avoid easily.
Spiteri throws a series of punches but Hill moves out of range.
Hill fires out a quick counter leg kick but Spiteri just manages to avoid it.

and Hill moves into the clinch.
Spiteri lands a right hand that snaps the head of Hill backwards.
Hill lands a shoulder strike.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Spiteri drops down for a takedown but doesn't get it.

Both fighters working to control the clinch.
Hill working on landing some head shots here - that one got through nicely.
Hill looks to throw an elbow but misses.

Hill feints with a shoulder and throws a nice leg kick to Spiteri's calf.
Jericho Hill has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Spiteri takes a nasty kick to the mid section... That should keep him thinking. Does he try and block and risk a head kick landing?

Spiteri shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Hill is trying to defend but Spiteri finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.

That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Jericho Hill.
I think Spiteri has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
