Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
11 - 2 - 1, fighting out of The Island, Alexander Vermeer! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
8 - 3 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Miesha Tate! The judges for this bout are Bart Greer, Sandra Marshall and Michael Johnstone.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Vermeer loads up on a big right hand but Tate slips the punch. Miesha Tate seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Tate shoots and misses and Vermeer connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.
It looks like Miesha Tate has been cut. Tate shoots in for a takedown but Vermeer shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet. Tate shoots in and drives through. Vermeer sprawls well. Alexander Vermeer has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Miesha Tate. Tate with a poor takedown and Vermeer counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw. Vermeer tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Tate was well out of range. Poor timing from Vermeer. Vermeer listening to his corner there, landing a nice uppercut. Tate misses with a body shot.
Tate tries for a takedown but Vermeer circles away easily and Vermeer cracks him with a counter punch right on the button. Vermeer throws a body shot but no joy. Vermeer cracks Tate with an open hand slap. Tate shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Vermeer pinned against the cage. Vermeer gets the underhooks and manages to circle away. Tate misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out. The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Tate closes this distance looking for a takedown but Vermeer circles away. Vermeer throwing a counter right hand but Tate manages to avoid it.
That's one minute gone in the round. Vermeer connects with a lovely right hand, straight down the pipe. Alexander Vermeer is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs. Vermeer comes forward and lands a shot to the body, then darts back out of range. Tate with a lazy takedown attempt and Vermeer counters with a straight right hand. Vermeer works his jab well there, keeping his opponent at a distance. Vermeer misses the body punch and Tate counters with a nice double leg into guard. We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake. Tate looking to pass the guard. Tate drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Vermeer manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Tate has Vermeer in his guard.
Tate looks winded! Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Tate has his foot on Vermeer's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Vermeer works his way back into a safe position though. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Tate looks to be working for a triangle here. Oh, it looks like he might have it! Vermeer has picked Tate up and slammed him! Tate can't keep hold of the triangle and Vermeer manages to pass to side control! Vermeer is staying tight to Tate's torso, preventing him from escaping. Vermeer's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Tate is positioning himself to get back to half guard. Vermeer throwing shots but missing, from side control. Vermeer decides to stand back up. Vermeer steps back and let's Tate get back to his feet. Tate fails in his attempt to clinch. Tate shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Vermeer as he avoids it easily. Tate gets his head snapped back by a nice shot there. Tate with a poor takedown letting Vermeer counter with a right hand. Vermeer connects with a crisp jab. Vermeer lands with a shot to the body. Vermeer connects with a single shot there.
Tate is rocked! Tate bobbing and weaving nicely... He's ducked under a jab and ducks again but ooooooh! Vermeer comes at him with an uppercut from hell! Tate falls to the canvas, unconscious! This one is all over! Oh man, looking at the replay that was right on the button! Tate was out before he hit the floor!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:59 of round 1, we have a winner by way of KO (Punch). Alexander Vermeer! In his post fight interview, Alexander Vermeer started talking himself up. Luckily his charisma kept the crowd on side and gave him a good reception.
