Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Carlos Ortega! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Victorio Faber Jr.! The judges for this bout are Sam Margolis, Andrew Berry and Paul Tew.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Faber Jr. fails with a takedown attempt. A solid leg kick lands there for Faber Jr..
Faber Jr. looks for the body kick but Ortega saw that one coming. Faber Jr. is looking to score with low kicks. It looked like Ortega was trying to counter with a body shot coming off that last attack from Faber Jr.. Ortega throws a looping overhand right but Faber Jr. ducks down to avoid it. Victorio Faber Jr. seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Ortega avoids the head kick by Faber Jr..
A head kick misses from Faber Jr.. Faber Jr. throws a leg kick but Ortega moved away. Faber Jr. throws the kick towards the body but Ortega avoids it. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. A slow jab from Ortega misses its intended target. Ortega missing with a left hand there. Faber Jr. was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one. Faber Jr. displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Ortega throws out the jab. Faber Jr. changes levels for a counter takedown but doesn't follow through with his attempt. Ortega takes a nice looking leg kick right on the meat of his thigh there.
Faber Jr. fakes with a right hand and throws a good leg kick, right into the thigh. That had to hurt Ortega. A looping hook to the body misses from Ortega. Faber Jr. does a little dance to reset his feet.
That's one minute gone in the round. Faber Jr. misses with a leg kick. Faber Jr. looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into side control! Oh, that's bad for Ortega! Faber Jr. tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Faber Jr. has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought! Faber Jr. tries for a kimura but Ortega is defending well. Faber Jr. goes for an armbar here - this could be all over! But no, Ortega has escaped beautifully and is now on top in side control! Oh, that's unlucky for Faber Jr. but great work by Ortega. Faber Jr. tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Ortega wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control. Faber Jr. wants to control but Ortega postures up. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Ortega stands up and beckons Faber Jr. to his feet.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Faber Jr. throws a leg kick but he was too far away and it doesn't land. A slapping leg kick lands for Faber Jr..
A decent looking cross lands there for Ortega. Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Faber Jr. ducks under a wild hook from Ortega. Ortega throws out a loose jab but Faber Jr. uses good head movement to avoid it. Faber Jr. moves his head to the side to avoid a jab but walks straight into a cross. Ortega moves out of range of the body kick. Ortega throws a series of punches but Faber Jr. avoids them all with ease. Good leg kick by Faber Jr. there. It's the ones that make that thud noise that hurt and that was an almighty thud.
Ortega throws a body shot but no joy. Ouch! a nice leg kick from Faber Jr., right into the meat.
Faber Jr. uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Ortega.
Faber Jr. throws a quick inside leg kick. Faber Jr. displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Ortega throws out the jab. Faber Jr. throws a head kick that Ortega semi-blocks.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Faber Jr. moves into range and lands a nice body kick.
Faber Jr. blocks a jab. Faber Jr. moves out of range of the strikes. Faber Jr. looks more muscular than last time we saw him. He must have been on the weights. Ortega sees a low kick coming and goes to check it, but it's actually a body kick and it thuds into his unprotected ribs. Faber Jr. throws a front kick aimed at Ortega's knee but Ortega avoids it well. Faber Jr. lands with a nice low kick. That'll leave a bruise. Ortega is hobbling a little on that front leg after taking quite a few leg kicks so far in this fight. Faber Jr. tries a head kick but it misses.
Faber Jr. moves away from the strike by Ortega. Faber Jr. looking to throw a kick but he's pulled out of it. Faber Jr. misses with the body kick and Faber Jr. takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.
Faber Jr. is rocked! Faber Jr. has his takedown stuffed and Ortega makes him pay by landing a nice hook to the body before moving out of range. Faber Jr. is still on wobbly legs! Can Ortega finish him? Ortega fires a straight punch through the middle that cracks Faber Jr. square on the jaw! Damn, Faber Jr. is out cold on his feet and topples face first to the canvas! Wow, I haven't seen a knockout that brutal in a long time!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:51 of round 1, we have a winner by way of KO (Punch). Carlos Ortega!
