Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
17 - 11 - 1, fighting out of Tokyo, Ivan Milat! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
16 - 9 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Peter Smith! The judges for this bout are Paul Tew, Richard Clark and Phil Schofield.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Smith fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt. Milat tries to counter by moving into the clinch but Smith manages to circle out of the way. Milat connects with a crisp jab. Good shot there by Smith. Smith throws a head kick that misses. Smith takes a kick to the body and keeps moving. Smith has his head snapped back a nice jab. A little nod from Smith there as he acknowledges the shot. Smith moves out of range as Milat throws a body kick.
Smith throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Smith drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. The crowd are loving this. Great action here. Smith is looking to take a break and control but Milat is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom. Smith controlling from side mount.
That's one minute gone in the round. Milat is looking to reverse the position. Milat is trying to get back to his feet. Smith controlling the position from side mount. Milat is trying to stand back up. He's worked his way up against the cage but Smith has just dragged him back down to the mat. Check out the look on Smith's face as he threw that strike - that's one determined fighter!
Milat tries to get back to half guard but can't. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Milat is trying to get back to half guard. He's pushing on Smith's leg. He's managed it. Nice work.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight. Milat is positioning himself well to prevent Smith advancing to mount. Smith is looking for a kimura but Milat is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Smith to get the leverage. Milat is looking to improve his position.

That's three minutes gone in the round. Smith takes advantage of the dominant position to land a couple of big hammer fists. Milat wants to improve his position but Smith is controlling well.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Smith tries to pass the half guard into mount. Milat knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt. Milat has his hands clasped together around Smith's back. He's all about the action. Smith is thwarting Milat's attempts to control the position. Milat is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though. Smith throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.
That's four minutes gone in the round. My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer. Smith lands with a punch from half guard. Smith is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
Smith thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas. Milat wants to get back to his feet. Milat holds on for dear life, maintaining half guard for now. Milat blocking the ground and pound attempt from Smith. Milat trying to control from the bottom.
The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet. Smith fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Milat to the ground. Smith is now in Milat's guard. Milat working a defensive guard here.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over. Milat tries to land a sweep but no joy. Smith trying to control the position from guard on top but Milat is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Peter Smith dominated that round. That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.
Smith throws a nice inside leg kick. Milat scores with a jab to the jaw of his opponent. Smith closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth. Milat throws his opponent off and manages to get back to his feet! Nicely done! Milat misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Smith moves out of range as Milat strikes. We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! Milat forces Smith back against the cage and clinches. Milat pushes off and fires off an elbow that misses, before clinching up again, against the cage. Smith gets a nice trip takedown into half guard. Milat moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard. Milat is trying to keep Smith in close.
That's one minute gone in the round. Smith stopping the sweep attempt from Milat. Smith is stalling in the full guard. Smith thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position. Milat controls Smith momentarily but Smith frees himself. Milat keeping moving, preventing Smith from controlling successfully. Peter Smith has got the better of the ground game so far. Milat wants to stand and escape but Smith is having none of it.
The referee decides to stand the fighters back up. Milat lands a head kick. Smith smiles back at him and beckons him forward.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so. A left and a right from Smith both land. Nice combination.
It looks like Ivan Milat has been cut. Milat changes levels and scores with a jab to the body. Ivan Milat is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs. Smith throws a couple of head shots and lands with the final one - a decent hook, which struck Milat on the side of the head. Milat scores with a jab to the head.
Smith on the wrong end of a nice hook. Milat forces Smith back against the cage and clinches. Milat throws a punch but it's blocked by Smith. Milat trying to land knees to the body.

Smith is trying to pull guard but being pressed up against the cage enables Milat to keep the fight standing. Smith is working for takedown but Milat is calmly controlling the position for now. Milat lands a glancing elbow in the clinch. Smith tries to pull guard but Milat holds him up against the cage and eventually Smith drops back down to his feet.
Ivan Milat has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Peter Smith. Milat throws an elbow that misses.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Milat lands an elbow just above Smith 's eye. Milat taking a breather. Milat misses with the head strike.

Smith tries to score a body lock takedown but Milat shows good agility there to stay on his feet. Smith is trying to pull guard but Milat has him pressed against the cage. Smith has Milat pressed up against the cage. He's trying to work for a single leg takedown. Smith pulls back from the cage and twists to the side, sending Milat tumbling to the mat - Smith dives into Milat's guard. Smith throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent. Milat is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Smith is controlling him. Milat is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Smith wants to control from the top but Milat keeps moving. Milat trying to control the position.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity. Milat gets caught flat footed, as Smith shoots in with a quick takedown into guard. Milat looking to sweep here. No luck so far. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Ivan Milat dominated that second round. The cut man is working on Ivan Milat's cut. The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! This is the final round!
A momentary lapse in concentration from Milat enables Smith to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Milat manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat. Milat wants to get back to his feet but Smith is in a dominant position and won't allow it. Smith looking to control the position here, rather than advance. Milat controls Smith momentarily but Smith frees himself. Smith engaging in some classic timewasting tactics. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Smith postures up and lands a big shot to Milat's brow.
That's one minute gone in the round. Smith loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry. Smith stands up over Milat, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head. Smith cracks Milat with a solid left hand. Smith wants to control from the top but Milat keeps moving. Smith slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard. Milat pushes Smith off and scrambles back to his feet.
Milat moves into the clinch. Smith blocking some punches.
With the two fighters working up against the cage, Milat just misses with a elbow thrown towards Smith's brow. A nice left hand lands by Milat.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Milat content to slow the pace in the clinch.

Milat lands an elbow that stopped Smith in his tracks for a moment. Smith looking to slow down the pace here. Smith is trying to drag Milat to the mat but Milat just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there. Smith pulls guard effortlessly. Smith can't keep his opponent in guard - Milat advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount. The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so! Smith is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Milat's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Milat's back!
That's three minutes gone in the round. Smith patiently working for the choke. Which fighter will keep their nerve here? Milat wants to escape the position.
Smith has managed to slip his arm under Milat's chin. This could be all over... yep, Milat is tapping out! Submission win for Smith.
