PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Billy Jack (ranked 7933 p4p, 655 weight class) and Phillip Baroni (ranked 7698 p4p, 646 weight class). Jack comes to the cage accompanied by The Legend of Billy Jack. Phillip Baroni told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Billy Jack!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Phillip Baroni!
The judges for this bout are Ron Honeybunn, Donatello Bradman and Winston Howard.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Baroni gets cracked with a nice right hand there by Jack.
Baroni has been spending a lot of time sparring his boxing in the run up to the fight, trying to sharpen up those hands and look for a knockout.
Nice straight punches there by Baroni. You know Roy Jones Jr respects the hands of Baroni.
Baroni throws a lazy right hand but Jack sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily.
Baroni will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Baroni looks to throw the jab but Jack is out of range.
A shot to the liver by Jack. Beautiful body shot.
Jack uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Baroni.
Jack is looking to counter the offense by Baroni and move into the clinch.

Jack closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Baroni to the mat! Baroni manages to get full guard.
Baroni wants to stand up but Jack is controlling him.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Baroni is using up a lot of energy trying to get back to his feet. Perhaps he should improve his position first.
Jack trying to control the position from guard on top but Baroni is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Jack passes Baroni's left leg - he's now in half guard.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Baroni wants to improve his position but Jack is controlling well.
Jack trying to control the pace.
Jack continues to stall.
Jack frees up his trapped foot and advances to mount.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Baroni wants to try and get back to his feet.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Baroni can do anything to dispel that myth.
Jack lands with some strikes.
Baroni is looking to get back to his feet - it's going to be hard from this position.
Jack thowing strikes but they're hitting the gloves, not doing any damage.
Baroni is trying to stand up.
Jack lands a big elbow.
Jack avoids the attempt from Baroni to control.
Jack throwing sloppy strikes here. Perhaps if he tightened up his striking from such a dominant position, he'd be able to finish easier.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Jack controlling the pace for now.

Jack with some aggressive grappling here. He's looking for submissions here, rather than waiting for the opportunity to counter.

Jack is going oldschool here, as he tries to force Baroni to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so Baroni shrugs it off.
Jack throwing sloppy strikes, which aren't doing any damage.
Baroni tries to buck Jack off but he can't manage it.
Baroni really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Jack. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Jack thowing strikes but they're hitting the gloves, not doing any damage.
Baroni takes a big shot to the head but keeps on trying to improve his position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Jack working for a submission but Baroni is keeping him at bay.

Baroni tries to buck Jack off so he can stand up but Jack has got his back now - this could be big trouble! He's slapped on a rear naked choke that looks really tight! Baroni falls backwards, slamming Jack to the mat but Jack holds on tight! Baroni is forced to tap and this one is all over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:25 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (RNC). Billy Jack!
Billy Jack decided to thank the fans in attendance for making a great atmosphere. It seemed to go down pretty well.
