Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
12 - 5 - 0, fighting out of New York, Peter Manuel! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
6 - 2 - 0, fighting out of New York, DJ Bango! The judges for this bout are Yasuomi Hirokawa, Shigeki Fujiwara and Shigeki Sano.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! An inside leg kick lands from Manuel. Bango throws a solid leg kick but Manuel takes the impact on his shin and smiles at Bango. Bango lands with a straight right. Manuel didn't see that one coming.
It looks like Peter Manuel has been cut. Bango walks into a left hand. Bango is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two. Manuel lands with an uppercut that bounces Bango off the cage and back into range. Manuel tries to clinch but Bango moves out of range. A big right from Bango misses. Manuel connects with a looping left hand that seems like it dazed Bango momentarily.
Bango on the wrong end of an overhand right that came out of nowhere. A big left from Bango misses. Manuel slips under a jab from Bango. Manuel connects with a lovely right hand, straight down the pipe. We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! Manuel uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Bango. Manuel looked to counter that last move with a leg kick but didn't pull the trigger. Manuel connects with a right hand. Bango shakes it off. Manuel throws a right hand that Bango ducks under and follows up with a left that Bango also avoids with ease. Bango throws a body kick, spinning off balance letting Manuel counter with a right hand. Bango digs a good body shot into Manuel's ribs. Manuel fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Bango loads up on a big right hand but Manuel slips the punch. Manuel rushes Bango and presses him up against the cage.
That's one minute gone in the round. Bango goes for a body shot but it's blocked.
Manuel lands a left hand that snaps the head of Bango backwards. Manuel is trying to pull guard but being pressed up against the cage enables Bango to keep the fight standing. Bango gets through Manuel's defenses to land a nice punch to the side of the head. Bango creates a bit of distance and throws an elbow that only just misses. Manuel pushes Bango back against the cage and unloads with a body punch. Manuel throws a punch but it's blocked by Bango. Manuel fails to pull guard.
Bango throws a head punch that misses. Manuel tries to pull guard but Bango holds him up against the cage and eventually Manuel drops back down to his feet.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Peter Manuel. That's going to take a lot out of him. Bango lands a left hand that snaps the head of Manuel backwards. Bango working some nice short punches in the clinch. Manuel presses Bango against the cage and delivers a mid-strength body shot. Manuel blocks a punch to the side of the head.
Bango pushes Manuel back against the cage and lands a hook to the side of the head. Manuel successfully pulls guard.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Manuel working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Bango doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Bango manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem. Manuel has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Bango can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Manuel is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle. Bango got a little sloppy there for a moment and Manuel has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Bango has managed to get both his arms back between Manuel's legs - danger averted. Bango slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up. Bango postures up in Manuel's guard and throws a big left but Manuel blocks it. Manuel has his foot on Bango's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Bango works his way back into a safe position though. Bango trying to control the position from guard on top but Manuel is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Manuel looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
Manuel is working actively from the bottom, looking for submissions. He's escaped his hips to the side and he's going for an armbar! Bango has his hands clasped together but Manuel extends and breaks Bango's desperate grasp, forcing a tap out due to armbar! Nice BJJ displayed there by Manuel.
