PBP Commentary |
Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Gabriel Gray (ranked 144 p4p, 14 weight class) and Ichabod Crane (ranked 1039 p4p, 103 weight class). Crane has chosen Love Inc!-Broken Bones! as his entrance music. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the heavyweight championship of the world! Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
24 - 4 - 0, fighting out of London, Gabriel Gray! And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
23 - 17 - 0, fighting out of New York, Ichabod Crane! The judges for this bout are Tiny Johnson, Frank Dennis and Stewart Dunkirk.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Gray misses with a straight left. Crane appeared to try and counter that last move with a leg kick. Crane blocks a head kick by Gray.
A little jabbing left from Crane on the counter but it doesn't find it's target. Gray gets to the clinch - let's see what his plan is here. Gray misses with a hook from the clinch. Gray swings away with an uppercut that misses.
Crane blocks a knee to the body. He'll have a nicely bruised forearm in the morning. Gray lands a right uppercut that snaps the head of Crane backwards. Gray misses with some punches.
Crane pulls Gray into guard.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Crane is avoiding any damage by keeping wrist control. Gray stopping the sweep attempt from Crane. Crane lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard. Gray keeping full guard, as Crane tries to pass.
That's one minute gone in the round. Crane keeps trying to improve his position. Crane engaging in some classic timewasting tactics. Crane wants to control from the top but Gray keeps moving. Gray pulls Crane in close to his closed guard and prevents Crane from doing any damage or advancing position. Gray continues to stall. Gray keeping moving, preventing Crane from controlling successfully.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena. Gray not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Crane throws a big right hand that misses. Crane wants to pass the guard but Gray is keeping the position. Crane slips nicely into half guard. Crane thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas. Crane is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Gray is just riding it out for now. Crane eventually gives up the hold. Still in half guard, Crane seems content to control.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Let's hope that Crane has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight. Crane is keen to just control but Gray is a slippery customer. We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup. Crane seems to be working for a kimura but Gray defends the submission attempt. Crane has been taking part in the yoga sessions down at The Takeover. Presumably he's going to look for a slick submission... Or maybe he's looking to avoid one. Crane is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Gray sees it coming and defends easily. The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily. Crane content to sit in half guard and control for a moment. Gray is staying active underneath Crane, who seems content to just control the action from this position. Crane is pressing down on Gray's thigh, looking to free his foot. Gray is holding on for now. Crane seems to be looking for submissions.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
That's four minutes gone in the round. The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so. Crane trying to mount his opponent but Gray defends it. Crane sitting in half guard, looking to land shots. Gray defending well though. Crane content to control rather than advance. Crane wants to pass to mount but Gray is defending the position. Crane is still trying to improve position. Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out! Crane takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Ichabod Crane dominated that round. Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin!
Gray keeping at a good range here, avoiding a leg kick.
Crane walks into a straight right hand from Gray. Gray connects with a solid leg kick. Crane blocks a jab. Crane tries a counter takedown but it's more of a dummy move, and he uses it to push himself away. Gray attempts a low kick but it misses it's target. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. A looping hook to the body misses from Gray. Crane does a little dance to reset his feet. Gray throws a leg kick that misses. Gray misses with a looping right. A little jabbing left from Crane on the counter but it doesn't find it's target.
That's one minute gone in the round. Gray throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Crane. Gray works Crane's body with a nice hook. Gray changes levels and scores with a jab to the body. Gray works his jab well there, keeping his opponent at a distance. Crane defending well as Gray loads up on a big left hand. And an attempted straight right on the counter from Crane! But no joy. Crane bobs and weaves and throws out a fast jab that snaps Gray's head backwards.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Gray throws a low kick but his opponent is out of range.
Gray scores with a spinning back kick! Crane checks a low kick. Bone on bone - not my idea of a good time. Crane looked like he wanted to counter with a punch but didn't throw it. Crane showing good head movement there, avoiding the strikes from Gray.
It seemed like Crane was going to counter with the hook but didn't fully commit to it. Gabriel Gray seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Gray throws a jab, cross combination which is slipped
and Crane counters with a stiff right hand. Both fighters are looking to counter, which isn't making for the most exciting fight in the world. A clash of legs there as Crane blocks the low kick. Crane let fly with a counter punch to the body but it didn't land.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Gray jabbing away but nothing is landing. Gray just misses with a punch to the body.
Crane looked like he wanted to counter with a punch but didn't throw it. Crane gets cracked there but stands up to it.
Crane has his takedown stuffed and Gray counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head. Gabriel Gray is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs. A left lands for Crane. Crane closes the distance and takes a jab right on the nose as he does so.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Gray swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target. Crane only half commits to the counter leg kick. Ouch! a nice leg kick from Gray, right into the meat.
Crane checks the leg kick nicely there.
Gray throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Crane looks like he wants to counter punch here. Crane thuds his right hand into Gray's forehead from close range. That could be painful for both fighters. The crowd thankful this round is nearly over. Gray throws an ugly left hook that misses
letting Crane counter with a right hand. Crane moves out of range as Gray throws a body kick.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Gabriel Gray dominated that second round. That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.
Crane takes a hook to the side of the head. I wonder if that's got his ears ringing.
Crane moves out of range of the strikes. Gray fakes low and throws an overhand right that catches Crane on the side of the head. Gabriel Gray is winning the standup battle so far. Gray listening to his corner there, landing a nice uppercut.
Crane is rocked! Crane gets clipped by a big right hand and goes down spinning to the canvas! Gray gets the back mount and begins to drop bombs on his rocked foe! Crane is too out of it to defend against the strikes and the referee jumps in to save him from the beatdown!
