PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Doug Bell (ranked 101 p4p, 14 weight class) and Kvame Zulu (ranked 47 p4p, 6 weight class). Zulu has chosen Big Badaboom as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. Kvame Zulu told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 22 - 8 - 0, fighting out of New York, Doug Bell!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 21 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Kvame Zulu!
The judges for this bout are Jack Bonds, Don Winkell and Timothy Bukovac.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Bell is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by Zulu.
Bell takes a big uppercut there. He seems a bit wobbly but no, he's OK.

Zulu gets caught flat footed, as Bell shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.
Zulu is controlling Bell's posture.
Bell trying to control but Zulu is working from the bottom.
Zulu avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
Zulu managing to control the position.
Bell working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Zulu looking to hit a scissor sweep but Bell is one step ahead there.
Bell won't allow Zulu to get back to his feet.

Bell wants to control from the top but Zulu keeps moving.
Bell postures up.
Zulu wants to sweep here but Bell controlling him for the moment.
Bell throws an elbow that misses. Zulu uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Bell's guard. Nice move by Zulu!

Bell is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Zulu won't allow Bell to get back to his feet.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Bell is working an open guard so Zulu takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.
Bell throws a sloppy head kick and Zulu moves out of range easily.
Zulu throws a front kick that sends Bell stumbling back into the cage.
A lazy left from Zulu finds it's target.
Doug Bell seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Zulu blocks a jab.
And an attempted straight right on the counter from Zulu! But no joy.
We've been hearing reports that Bell has been drilling takedowns in recent sessions so let's see if that has an impact on the result of this fight.

Bell looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.
Zulu is controlling Bell's trapped leg to prevent Bell from advancing to side control.
Bell throws a strike but Zulu avoids it easily and moves to full guard.
Zulu manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Bell manages to get himself to full guard.

Zulu stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Bell swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Zulu wants to pass the guard but Bell is keeping the position.

Zulu stands up from Bell's guard - Zulu perhaps looking for a knockout.
Zulu throws a hook but Bell blocks it.
Bell swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target.
Bell throws a lazy right hand but Zulu sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily.
Zulu connects with a leg kick. Bell looked like he was expecting something else and didn't defend it.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Bell misses with an uppercut. Zulu saw that one coming.
Kvame Zulu is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Bell throws a half hearted mid kick.
Zulu works Bell's body with a nice hook.
Bell misses with a hook
and Zulu counters with a lovely straight right hand!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Kvame Zulu dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.

Bell throws out a token jab with nothing on it.
Bell checks the leg kick nicely there.
Bell misses with a left hand
and Zulu counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.
Zulu has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Zulu uses good head movement to avoid the hook from Bell.
A clash of legs there as Bell blocks the low kick.
Zulu throws a shot to the body.
Zulu takes a solid shot to the body. That one hurt him but he's trying not to show it.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Bell takes a nice looking leg kick right on the meat of his thigh there.
Bell misses with a hook.
Zulu has used his reach advantage pretty well so far tonight.
A cross from Bell lands.
Kvame Zulu seems to be getting the better of the standup.
Bell has a takedown stuffed.
Bell moves out of range of the strikes.
Zulu throws a push kick but Bell slaps the foot to one side.
Bell catches Zulu with a nice straight right. He seems pissed - ooooh, it's on now! On like donkey kong!
Zulu is using his reach advantage to land shots from outside his opponent's range.

Zulu looks to throw the jab but Bell is out of range.
Bell misses with a left hand
and Zulu connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.
Bell is really head hunting here, hardly looking to strike to the body at all.
Bell throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Zulu defending well as Bell loads up on a big left hand.
Bell is really struggling to find his range with his punches. Zulu's reach advantage is clearly causing him problems.
Zulu throws a body shot but no joy.
Zulu ducks under a wild hook from Bell.
Zulu displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Bell.
A nice side step and Zulu releases a counter shot to the body, but it doesn't find it's home.
Zulu cracks Bell with a right hand to the side of the head.
Zulu misses with a low kick.

Bell closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Zulu to the mat! Zulu manages to get full guard.

Zulu is edging up against the cage. He's using the cage to get back to his feet. Nice work there - the fighters are clinched.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
An uppercut on the inside fails to land for Bell.
Bell is trying to break the clinch but Zulu has him pressed against the cage.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Zulu struggles to land a body shot inside as Bell controls his hands.

Bell breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
A swing and a miss from Bell.
Zulu feints a counter leg kick.
Bell throws an ugly left hook that misses
and Zulu makes the exchange count by landing a cracking kick to the body. Bell really felt that one!
Bell walks into a straight right hand from Zulu.
Zulu throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Bell lands with a shot to the body.
Zulu steps to the side to avoid the strikes from Bell.
Bell misses with a wild body shot.
Zulu doesn't fully commit to the body shot counter.
Bell misses with a body shot
and Zulu counters with a stiff right hand.

Bell manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Zulu on his heels. He'll look to pass Zulu's guard now, I'm sure.
Zulu is wriggling around but Bell manages to pass to half guard.

Zulu is looking to escape.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Ground and pound from Bell.
Bell seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Bell lands strikes from half guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Bell missing with some ground and pound from the half guard.
Zulu keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.
Zulu is trying is best to control the position here.
Bell drops an elbow to the side of Zulu's head.

Zulu pushes Bell off and gets back to his feet.
Bell fails to land with a series of punches.
A little jabbing left from Zulu on the counter but it doesn't find it's target.
Bell with a poor takedown
and Zulu connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Doug Bell. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Zulu scoring well with a low kick there.
Zulu fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Bell manages to avoid it.

and Zulu counters with a crisp right hand that drops Bell! Zulu lets Bell back up to his feet, looking for a finish!


It looks like Doug Bell has been cut.
This has been an exciting period of action!

Zulu lands a big uppercut and Bell crumbles to the floor! The ref thinks about stopping the fight but Bell looks OK. Zulu waves Bell back to his feet!


Bell is rocked!
Bell cracks Zulu with a nice right hand that draws applause from the crowd.

Zulu sends Bell crashing to the mat with a devastating uppercut! Zulu is motioning to the referee to let Bell up. He wants to try and finish this one on the feet!
Oh Bell is still all over the place! His legs are completely gone! Will he be able to recover?!!

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Zulu lands a kick to the ribs of his opponent. Nice work there - in and out in a flash.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Zulu ducks down and throws a big overhand right - it lands flush on the jaw, knocking Bell out cold! The fight is over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:11 of round 2, we have a winner by way of KO (Punch). Kvame Zulu!
A victorious Kvame Zulu thanked his army of followers in his post fight interview, telling people to make sure they follow him on Twitter.
