Bakkes was raised on a maize farm in Kroonstad in the Free State. His parents became concerned about his unusual strength as a child. They sent him to the MHDC in Cape Town for tests when he was 4 years old. He was placed on medication to soften his erratic strength outbursts. In accordance with the law, the medication was stopped when he turned 18. He quickly won various strength awards, including arm wrestling and strongman tournaments. He joined the MMA team of Hunter Johnson in 2018.
