enabling Spartan to counter with a crisp jab. Kuznetsov throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land. Spartan looking to throw a kick but he's pulled out of it. Spartan scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice. Spartan is pausing for a moment. What's he doing? It looks like he's clearing his nose. Oh dude! He's shot a load of snot all down Kuznetsov's shoulder. That is not cool. Kuznetsov has been talking about how he's improved his wrestling in the run up to the fight so let's see if that's enough to sway the balance. Spartan's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige. Spartan wants to control but Kuznetsov is keeping him busy.

I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.

Not much technique there but it did the business. Kuznetsov lands a jab followed by a nice looking cross.

Spartan displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Kuznetsov throws out the jab. Spartan looks to land a combination. Kuznetsov sees it coming but can only parry a couple of the shots. Spartan throws a head kick that misses. Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Spartan fails miserably with a takedown attempt. Nikolai Kuznetsov has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Furio Spartan. Spartan darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard. Kuznetsov has managed to escape just enough to sneak back to his feet but Spartan is on him like a limpet, forcing Kuznetsov back against the cage.

Spartan rushes Kuznetsov and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch. With the fighters clinched against the cage, Spartan creates a bit of distance for himself and scores with a nice uppercut. Spartan prevents Kuznetsov from breaking the clinch. The crowd applaud the fighters' efforts here as the round comes to an end. Kuznetsov softening up his opponent with strikes, against the cage. Kuznetsov pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat. Kuznetsov connects with a looping right hand.

The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Mikolajczyk shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Switzer defends it nicely. Jab from Switzer. Mikolajczyk bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes. Switzer throws the left hand but Mikolajczyk avoids the punch easily. Switzer works his jab well there, keeping his opponent at a distance. Mikolajczyk gets a takedown into half guard. Mikolajczyk looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.
That's one minute gone in the round. Mikolajczyk is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Switzer sees it coming and defends easily. Switzer is trying to stand.

Switzer says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
