Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Jans Schmidt (ranked 2829 p4p, 1127 weight class) and Cody Evans (ranked 260 p4p, 110 weight class). Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 9 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Jans Schmidt!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 8 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Cody Evans!
The judges for this bout are George Francis, Frank Dennis and Alan Glass.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Schmidt rushes Evans and presses him up against the cage.
Schmidt misses with a body punch.
Schmidt throws a head punch that misses.
Schmidt throws a punch but it's blocked by Evans.

Evans lands a nice trip takedown into half guard.
Schmidt has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Evans is working away from the top position though.
Evans winds up and cracks Schmidt with a swinging punch to the side of the head.
Schmidt has hold of Evans's hands but Evans slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.
Schmidt is holding on to half guard well.
The referee calls for the fighters to work.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Schmidt wants to get back to full guard.
Evans performing his best blanket impression for a moment.
Evans not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.

Evans wants to free his trapped foot but Schmidt is holding on for dear life with his legs.

Schmidt tries to move into range but Evans moves to the side and lands with a nice right hand.
Evans shoots in for a takedown but Schmidt shows good takedown defense.

Schmidt appears to be looking for a big counter.

Schmidt fails with an attempt to clinch.
Schmidt lands with a straight right. Evans didn't see that one coming.

Evans closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Schmidt quickly recovers to half guard.
Schmidt is looking to control Evans's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Schmidt avoid being mounted?
Evans prevents Schmidt from improving his position.

Evans throwing shots but Schmidt is blocking nicely.

Evans thows a huge punch but Schmidt dodges it nicely.

Schmidt uses decent footwork to sidestep a right hand from Evans.

and Evans counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.
Schmidt lands with a thumping leg kick.

Schmidt wants to clinch.
A telegraphed right hand from Evans misses the target.
Schmidt tries to clinch there but Evans circles away.
Evans chopped to the floor by a nice leg kick but he springs right back up before Schmidt can pounce on him.
Schmidt takes a jab right on the nose. That must have hurt but he shrugs his shoulders and looks to return the favor.

It looks like Jans Schmidt has been cut.
Schmidt looks to have improved his striking defense since last time we saw him fight.
Schmidt misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Evans.

Schmidt moves away from the strike by Evans.
Evans just misses with a punch to the body.
As Evans tries to get set, Schmidt tries to push him back and clinch up but Evans manages to avoid the attempt.

Evans shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Schmidt napping and manages to drive through into side control!
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Evans working away diligently from side control. Landing strikes effectively there - that will score him some points on the judges scorecards.
Schmidt tries to bench press Evans off him but Evans keeps the position.

And Schmidt counters with a quick kick to the body but Evans blocks it.

Schmidt moves in looking to clinch but Evans pushes him off.

and Schmidt counters with a nice body kick.

and Evans decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Schmidt's guard.
Schmidt is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Schmidt has his hands up protecting his head but a hook from Evans finds it's way round the side to connect with Schmidt's head.
Cody Evans is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.
Schmidt walks straight into a jab right on the nose. That one stung - he's blinking and trying to clear his head.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
