PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Tanaka Matsuda (ranked 10 p4p, 88 weight class) and Sergey Shipilov (ranked 1 p4p, 13 weight class). Matsuda comes to the cage accompanied by Gojira - Another World. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the middleweight championship of the world!
Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 26 - 10 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Tanaka Matsuda!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 30 - 16 - 1, fighting out of Helsinki, Sergey Shipilov!
The judges for this bout are Don Winkell, Jack Bonds and Timothy Bukovac.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Shipilov defending well as Matsuda loads up on a big left hand.
Matsuda lands a nice looking body shot.
Shipilov takes one to the chin there.
Matsuda ducks under a wild hook from Shipilov.
Shipilov tries to score with a low kick but Matsuda moves his leg out of the way.
Matsuda changes levels looking for a counter takedown but doesn't commit.
Matsuda lands with a shot to the body.
Shipilov uses good head movement to avoid the hook from Matsuda.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Matsuda shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard.

Matsuda is keen to just control but Shipilov is a slippery customer.

We've been hearing reports that Matsuda has been drilling takedowns in recent sessions so let's see if that has an impact on the result of this fight.
Matsuda swings for the body but Shipilov moves out of range.
Shipilov has been spending a lot of time sparring his boxing in the run up to the fight, trying to sharpen up those hands and look for a knockout.

Matsuda swings and misses with a hook to the body.
Shipilov throws a quick head kick that skims the top of Matsuda's head.

It looks like Tanaka Matsuda has been cut.

Matsuda shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Shipilov napping and manages to drive through into side control!

Matsuda scores with a couple of nice shots to the head there. The referee takes a look at Shipilov to see if he's OK.
Shipilov pushes Matsuda away and creates a bit of space to escape. He's almost out here... but no, Matsuda gets a good hold of his legs and remains firmly in side control.

Matsuda is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Shipilov knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.

Matsuda is working for what looks like an arm triangle here. Shipilov is trying to escape and Matsuda transitions quickly into an armbar! He's slapped it on tight and Shipilov is forced to tap! Nice work there by Matsuda! Very nice indeed!

After winning the bout, Tanaka Matsuda thanked all his fans and promised he'd do even better in his next fight. The crowd seemed to love his humility.
