PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between John Smith (ranked 1708 p4p, 2234 weight class) and Julian Bashir (ranked 97 p4p, 127 weight class). Bashir has chosen Exodus - The Toxic Waltz as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 5 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, John Smith!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Julian Bashir!
The judges for this bout are Ian Loll, Robert Douchet and Alec Ball.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Bashir misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Smith.
Smith misses with a combination

and Bashir decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Smith's guard.
Bashir with a nice head shot there.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Smith tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Bashir works a leg free and moves into half guard.
Smith has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Bashir is working away from the top position though.
Bashir throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Bashir in particular looking to stall.
Bashir wants to take a breather but Smith is having none of it.

Bashir is in a good position here but he's just trying to control... And he's not even managing to do that successfully.
The referee calls for the fighters to work.
Bashir looks more muscular than last time we saw him. He must have been on the weights.
Bashir trying to control the action but Smith is working from the bottom.

Smith works his way to full guard. Good work.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Bashir postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.

Bashir wants to control from the top but Smith keeps moving.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Bashir lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.
Smith stalks Bashir and leaps in with a furious combination of punches. Uppercuts and crosses smash into Bashir's face. Bashir staggers backwards, shaken.
Bashir throws a body punch but Smith moves out of range.
Smith looks for a takedown but Bashir sprawls well.
A little jabbing left from Bashir on the counter but it doesn't find it's target.

Bashir throws a hook but Smith avoids it easily.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Smith.
And Bashir tries to counter it with a takedown but Smith pushes his down on his head and steps out.
Smith lands the left hand.
Smith fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for John Smith. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Bashir misses with an uppercut. Smith saw that one coming.

John Smith seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Smith throws a hook to the side of Bashir's head but Bashir sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.

Smith changes levels looking for a counter takedown but doesn't commit.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Bashir is looking to regain half guard here but Smith keeps moving and retains side control.
Bashir is not content to let Smith control the position.

Bashir is keeping good posture, landing some ground and pound.
Bashir wants to free his trapped foot but Smith is holding on for dear life with his legs.

Bashir is looking to take a break and control but Smith is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Smith wants to improve his position but Bashir is controlling well.
Bashir has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

Bashir is stalling here. Smith is in no mood to hang around though. He's locked up a kimura from the bottom! Bashir seems to be keeping calm but he's forced to roll out of the hold and Smith has ended up in side control on the top. Nice work.

Smith has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

Bashir looking to hit a scissor sweep but Smith is one step ahead there.
Smith connects with a couple of short punches.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Julian Bashir showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's time! Back to the action! Ladies and gentlemen, this is the final round!

Smith darts in looking for a takedown but Bashir gets double underhooks and turns Smith into the cage.
Bashir lands a short shot on the inside that snaps the head of Smith backwards.
Smith wants to take the fight to the mat but Bashir manages to get underhooks and keep the fight in the clinch.

Bashir's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Smith keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.
Smith throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Bashir's waist but Bashir gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Smith off to one side.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for John Smith. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Bashir throws a jab when Smith was well out of range.
Smith half commits to a counter takedown before pushing away, out of range.

so Bashir counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
Bashir keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Smith's head.
Smith keeping moving, preventing Bashir from controlling successfully.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Bashir not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
Let's hope that Bashir has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.

Smith is rocked!
Bashir is sitting in guard, working some ground and pound.
Oh Smith is still in real trouble! Will he be able to recover?!!
Bashir arches his back and unloads with a massive left and a right! Smith's eyes roll back into his head, he's out cold! The ref dives in to stop the fight - wow, they were hard shots!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:56 of round 3, we have a winner by way of KO (Strikes). Julian Bashir!
