PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Stephen Hawking (ranked 2037 p4p, 3004 weight class) and Dougie McFistface (ranked 275 p4p, 385 weight class). McFistface has chosen Tiptoe Through The Tulips as his entrance music. Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 9 - 9 - 0, fighting out of London, Stephen Hawking!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 9 - 8 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Dougie McFistface!
The judges for this bout are Chris Dean, Damien Edna and Darius Henderson.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
McFistface throws a nice inside leg kick.
Both fighters circling a little - McFistface finishes the exchange with a kick to the body.
McFistface fakes and then throws a beautiful body shot. Hawking looks a bit winded and takes a step backwards to take a breath.
McFistface throws a two punch combo that lands nicely.
McFistface avoids the body shot from Hawking.
McFistface is looking to clinch.
Hawking moves out of range of the leg kick from McFistface.
McFistface tries for a takedown but Hawking sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
Hawking tries to counter by clinching up but McFistface breaks away and moves out of range.
McFistface wants to land a leg kick but Hawking is out of range.
McFistface is trying hard to land a takedown here. Hawking sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.
Hawking looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.

Hawking fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with McFistface, pushing him back against the cage.
McFistface has Hawking pressed against the cage, preventing Hawking from circling away and getting back to striking at range.
Hawking using the Thai plumb to throw knees but McFistface has his back arched nicely, preventing the strike.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

McFistface told us before the fight that he's been working on his elbows. An under utilised technique these days - let's see if it can sway the outcome of the fight.
McFistface tries a body shot but Hawking blocks it.
I was talking to Hawking's coach per-fight and he was telling me that they'd been working on the clinch in the runup to this fight.

McFistface gets control of Hawking's arms and successfully pulls guard. McFistface will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.

Hawking wants to stand but McFistface has a closed guard, so he can't escape.

Hawking throws an elbow that misses. McFistface uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Hawking's guard. Nice move by McFistface!

McFistface seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Hawking does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Hawking pushes McFistface off looking to stand but McFistface dives back in and keeps control.
McFistface looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.
Hawking knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for McFistface on the ground.

Hawking manages to escape and get back to his feet!
Hawking throws a wild combination but nothing lands.
McFistface is looking for the big counter here.
McFistface tries to close the distance and clinch but Hawking swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Hawking throws a head kick but McFistface moves out of range.
McFistface shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Stephen Hawking has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Dougie McFistface.
Hawking throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
McFistface blocks a head kick by Hawking.
Hawking ducks down and throws a hook to the body but McFistface moves away.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

A telegraphed takedown attempt from McFistface is defended easily by Hawking.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. This is the final round!

McFistface throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Hawking's waist but Hawking gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing McFistface off to one side.

McFistface shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Hawking's guard.

McFistface drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Hawking dives on top into guard.

McFistface connects with a decent looking elbow from side control that caused Hawking some visible discomfort.

Hawking is looking to work his way out of this bad position but McFistface is controlling him well.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Stephen Hawking.
I think McFistface has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
