PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a super heavyweight MMA rules bout between Kim Jones (ranked 715 p4p, 1566 weight class) and Ledley King (ranked 50 p4p, 84 weight class). Ledley King told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 16 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Kim Jones!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 12 - 7 - 0, fighting out of London, Ledley King!
The judges for this bout are James Atkins, Andrew Berry and Paul Tew.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Jones moves away from the strike by King.
King swings widly with a right hand
and Jones counters with a lovely straight right hand!
King scores with a nice head shot.
King tries to clinch
and Jones counters with a straight punch to the midsection.
King throws a push kick but Jones slaps the foot to one side.
King bobbing and weaving, closes the distance and lands a hook to the side of Jones's head.
Ledley King seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
King throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land.
King has been spending a lot of time sparring his boxing in the run up to the fight, trying to sharpen up those hands and look for a knockout.
King misses with an uppercut.

Jones gets in close and instigates a clinch.

Jones manages to break the clinch.
King misses the body punch
and Jones counters with a straight right hand.
King misses the shot to the body.
Jones with a nice cross.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
King tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Jones was well out of range. Poor timing from King.
King fails in his attempt to clinch.
An attempted straight right counter from Jones misses the target.
King lands with a straight right. Jones didn't see that one coming.
King misses with a lunging right hand
letting Jones counter with a right hand.

King is rocked!

King manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Jones on his heels. He'll look to pass Jones's guard now, I'm sure.
King is still in real trouble! Can Jones finish him?

That's one minute gone in the round.
King throws a strike but Jones rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

King seems to have recovered his senses.

King working away from the bottom but not quite defensive enough there because Jones has passed into half guard!
Jones is working hard to pass the guard. He's done it - he's now in full mount! Trouble for King!
Jones wants to take his opponent's back but King doesn't allow it.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
King really trying hard to get back to half guard here.
King sneaks a leg under to get to half guard.
King tries to get to full guard but Jones has control of the leg.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
King is trying to maintain the position but Jones is very close to passing his half guard.

King looking to work for a kimura from the bottom.
King trying to control from the bottom.
Jones is trying to control the action in half guard but King is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
The referee calls for the fighters to work.
King is looking to improve his position.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
The fighters are battling for position here. King manages to regain full guard. Nice work.
Jones has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

King working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Jones doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Jones manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
King is trying to keep Jones in close.
Jones engaging in some classic timewasting tactics.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
King trying to control the position.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up.
King fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Jones manages to avoid it.
King throws a wild body kick that Jones sees coming a mile off.

Jones closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.
I was talking to Jones's coach per-fight and he was telling me that they'd been working on the clinch in the runup to this fight.
Jones misses with some punches.

King turns his hips and lands a very nice judo throw into side control!
King throwing strikes but Jones manages to buck up and roll into a nice reversal - now he's on top in side control!
King manages to get back to half guard.
King tries to roll over but Jones keeps him under control.

Jones seems like he's working for an arm triangle here. He's freed his trapped foot and he's rotating nicely. King is in big trouble! He's tapping out! This one is aaaaaaaaaaaall over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:58 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Arm Triangle). Kim Jones!
A less than humble Kim Jones misjudged his post fight interview somewhat and came across a little too arrogant whilst trying to hype up his own abilities.
