PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Kwasi Kwong (ranked 247 p4p, 660 weight class) and Rokken Roll (ranked 38 p4p, 92 weight class). Rokken Roll has the eye of the tiger tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 23 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Kwasi Kwong!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 16 - 6 - 1, fighting out of Amsterdam, Rokken Roll!
The judges for this bout are Shigeki Sano, Hirohito Nitta and Ren Mimura.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Kwong scores with a decent looking hook.
Roll throws a body punch but Kwong moves out of range.
Roll slips a straight right by Kwong.
Kwong misses with a body shot.
Kwong fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Roll manages to avoid it.
We can't be sure of the tactics at this early stage but we have heard that Roll has been working on his takedowns a lot in the buildup to the fight and we can only assume he's going to look to take this to the mat.
Roll cracks a nice hook into Kwong's ribs.
Oooooooooooh, not good. A low kick from Roll lands where it shouldn't have, right in the... well, you know what he did? He kicked him in the penis. He's injured, injured bad. The referee sends both fighters to their corners and Kwong has 5 minutes to recover. He's OK now though... a thumbs up from Kwong and we're back underway with a touch of gloves.

and Kwong counters with a straight right hand.
Roll feints a jab promting Kwong to slip. Roll then demonstrates his capabilities by jabbing again. Kwong slips again and ducks right into an uppercut.
Roll clobbers Kwong with an overhand right that has the crowd gasping. That made a horrendous noise.
Kwong looks to have improved his striking defense since last time we saw him fight.
Roll avoids the body shot from Kwong.
Roll throws out a counter right but Kwong avoids it with no problem.
Roll throws a hook but Kwong blocks it.
Kwong swings wildly with a hook that is half blocked by Roll.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Roll throws a right hand that misses
and Kwong counters with a nice uppercut.
Roll scores with a crisp jab that stopped Kwong in his tracks.
Kwong misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Roll.
Roll misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Roll lands with a nice low kick. That'll leave a bruise.
Roll ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face.
Roll jabbing away but nothing is landing.
Kwong dips down and scores with a jab to the body.
Kwong swings for the body but Roll moves out of range.
Wow, both these guys are really going for it!

Roll cracks Kwong with an open hand slap.

Roll bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
Roll is pausing for a moment. What's he doing? It looks like he's clearing his nose. Oh dude! He's shot a load of snot all down Kwong's shoulder. That is not cool.
Roll wants to lay and pray for a moment but Kwong keeps working.
Roll wants to take a breather but Kwong manages to regain guard - a lesson learnt for Roll.

Roll postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Kwong is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Roll, into his guard.

Roll is still trying to improve position.
Kwong slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.

Roll throws his legs up looking to secure a triangle. Oh, that looks pretty tight, I gotta say! Kwong escapes and throws Roll's legs to the side, diving into side control!
Roll wants to control but Kwong postures up.
Roll manages to work his way to half guard, despite Kwong's best efforts.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Well, if Kwong is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
Roll regains full guard. Nicely done.

Roll escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Kwong gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

That was a close round but I would say that Kwasi Kwong will probably get the nod.

Roll tried to score with a low kick but Kwong checks it.
Kwong throws out a token jab with nothing on it.
Roll tries to score with an inside leg kick but telegraphs it and Kwong is able to avoid easily.
Roll throws a low kick but his opponent is out of range.
A punch lands to the side of Roll 's head but he takes it in his stride.
Roll slips under a jab from Kwong.
Kwong missing with a left hand there. Roll was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one.

A little feinted left hand from Kwong on the counter but he doesn't commit to it.
Roll scores with a slapping inside leg kick.

Rokken Roll seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Roll fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Kwong manages to avoid it.
Kwong throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Kwong throws a hook to the side of Roll's head but Roll sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.
Roll cracks Kwong with a nice right hand that draws applause from the crowd.
A clash of legs there as Kwong blocks the low kick.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Roll feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

Kwong takes a swing at Roll's ribcage but misses.

Kwong is hobbling a little on that front leg after taking quite a few leg kicks so far in this fight.
Roll will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
It looked like Kwong wanted to counter with a hook but didn't fully commit.

The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Roll pivots, looking for a leg kick but Kwong is out of range and Roll settles back down.
Roll lands an overhand left. A wild punch that just about connected.
Roll throws a series of punches but Kwong avoids them all with ease.
Kwong connects with a good right hand that stumbles Roll. Roll circles away out of range and recomposes himself.

Roll shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Kwong is trying to defend but Roll finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.

I would just about give that final round to Rokken Roll.
Well Roll has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
