The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Jackson darts in and out, connecting with a jab. Jon Jackson seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Jackson throws a jab but it's blocked by Ribeiro. Ribeiro is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by Jackson. Nice takedown defense from Ribeiro. No joy for Jackson on that attempt. Ribeiro throws a counter combo. Jackson fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt. Jackson attempts a low kick but it misses it's target. It seemed like Ribeiro was going to counter with the hook but didn't fully commit to it. Jackson looks to score with a jab to the body but Ribeiro is just out of range. Jackson ducks under a wild hook from Ribeiro. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Jackson changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Ribeiro looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better. Ribeiro can't do much from the bottom here. We've been hearing good reports from Jackson's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today.
Jackson thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead. Ribeiro really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Jackson. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
That's one minute gone in the round. Jackson controls the position.
Jackson tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though. Jackson will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions. Ribeiro defending against the ground and pound.
Jackson in side control, working for a kimura. He's got hold of an arm and he's torquing it... Ribeiro is tapping! That's the end of the fight!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:58 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kimura). Jon Jackson! Jon Jackson retains his welterweight title! Jon Jackson gave a mention to Advance Sport Supplements in his post fight interview. That will please them (and hopefully generate some sales).
