PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Rob Roy (ranked 653 p4p, 243 weight class) and Maximus Furioto (ranked 79 p4p, 27 weight class). Furioto is bouncing up and down as he enters the arena, backed by 韻踏合組合 - . Rob Roy had real problems making weight for this fight. After initially coming in at 146.3lbs, he had two hours to make the official fight weight. He made it but it will have taken a lot out of him to cut those extra few pounds. Both fighters really staring each other down here, as Maximus Furioto enters the cage!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 45 - 23 - 1, fighting out of New York, Rob Roy!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 37 - 20 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Maximus Furioto!
The judges for this bout are Paul Gruel, Roger Salmon and Chris Saunders.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Roy throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land.
Furioto uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Roy.
A swing and a miss from Furioto.
Roy feinted there with a counter leg kick.
Furioto uses good head movement to avoid the hook from Roy.
A low kick from Roy misses
and Furioto counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.
Furioto is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
Furioto looks shocked there as he takes a right hand to the temple.

It looks like Maximus Furioto has been cut.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Furioto fails with a takedown attempt.

Furioto looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Roy is fending him off so far but Furioto persists. Nope, Roy circles away and we're back to standing.
As Furioto backs away, Roy returns fire with a leg kick that just misses.
Roy keeps his opponent at a distance with a nice jab.
Roy is looking to slow Furioto down with leg kicks.
Furioto uses decent footwork to sidestep a right hand from Roy.
Roy tries to land a leg kick but Furioto saw it coming and moves away.
And an attempted straight right on the counter from Furioto! But no joy.
Roy thuds his right hand into Furioto's forehead from close range. That could be painful for both fighters.

and Furioto counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Furioto.
I was talking to Roy's coach per-fight and he was telling me that they'd been working on the clinch in the runup to this fight.
Roy lands an uppercut.
Furioto is looking for a takedown.

Roy breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Furioto fails with the takedown
and Roy counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.

Furioto is rocked!
Furioto has tried to improve his agility in the runup to this fight.
Roy throws an overhand right that lands on Furioto's shoulder, as Furioto tries to avoid the shot.
Both fighters are looking to counter, which isn't making for the most exciting fight in the world.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

Furioto is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.

Furioto has gone for a leg lock! Roy slips out almost immediately though and dives into Furioto's guard.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Roy wants to stand and escape but instead Furioto has hit a sweep and he's now on top in guard.


Furioto has gone for a leg lock! Roy slips out almost immediately though and dives into Furioto's guard.

Roy has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
Roy is looking to stand up but Furioto won't let him.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.

Furioto shoots for a double leg takedown but Roy sprawls well. He's pushed Furioto's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.

Furioto will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.

and Roy counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.

That has opened up Maximus Furioto's cut even more.

Furioto tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Roy defends well and Furioto ends up having to push Roy into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.

Furioto moves in looking to clinch but Roy pushes him off.

Roy was looking to counter that move with a punch but didn't quite pull the trigger.

Roy gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.

Furioto drops back, looking for a kneebar! Roy looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Roy looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Roy!

The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Furioto manages to get back to half guard.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Furioto steps to his left, right into the path of a big body kick from Roy. That one must have hurt.

and Roy counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.

Furioto throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Roy's waist but Roy gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Furioto off to one side.

Well I reckon that's a shut out for Roy, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
