PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Pete Price (ranked 1133 p4p, 1432 weight class) and Marcus Johnson (ranked 150 p4p, 181 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 14 - 11 - 1, fighting out of Montreal, Pete Price!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 15 - 10 - 1, fighting out of Montreal, Marcus Johnson!
The judges for this bout are William Peck, Yves DeLean and Elvis Blanc.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A telegraphed right hand from Price misses the target.
Johnson misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Price misses with a left hand
and Johnson counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.
We've been hearing reports that Price has been drilling takedowns in recent sessions so let's see if that has an impact on the result of this fight.

It looks like Marcus Johnson has been cut.
The fighters circle momentarily. Price darts into range and connects with a nice straight punch.

Nice combo by Price! Oh, that's hurt him - Johnson falls to the canvas and Price follows him into side control.

Johnson is putting a lot of effort into getting back to his feet here.
Price tries to cartwheel into mount but he doesn't manage it.
Price sitting in side control, looking to soften his opponent up with elbows and hammerfists but Johnson is avoiding damage well and looking to escape the position.

Price lands a nice forearm strike.
Price tries to move to mount but Johnson blocks the move with his legs.

That has opened up Marcus Johnson's cut even more.
Price wants to control but Johnson is keeping him busy.

Price is persistently looking for the submission but Johnson is defending it well.
Johnson really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Price. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Price is trying to stick to Johnson's back but Johnson is turning into Price. He's managed to reverse the position - now he's in Price's guard. Polite applause from the crowd in appreciation of some nice Jiu Jitsu by Johnson.

Johnson is looking to stand up but Price won't let him.
Johnson looks more muscular than last time we saw him. He must have been on the weights.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Johnson is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.

Price working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Johnson doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Johnson manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Johnson is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.

Johnson wants to get up but he can't break Price's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.
Price is avoiding any damage by keeping wrist control.
Johnson has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Price is proving hard to escape from.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.

Price has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Johnson can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Johnson wants to stand but Price is controlling his posture from full guard.
Johnson must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.

It looks like Pete Price has been cut.

Price is moving around nicely and scores here with a single head shot.

Price blocks a head kick by Johnson.
Price with poor footwork there. He got himself in a bit of a tangle, enabling Johnson to score with a decent uppercut.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Johnson works the jab nicely.
Price pushing out the jab but it's not landing.
Price on the wrong end of a decent looking cross there.
Price shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Johnson but Johnson pushes him off and we're back to square one.

Price shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Johnson is trying to defend but Price finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.

Johnson manages to create a bit of space in order to work his way back to his feet. Price keeps hold of his opponent and drives him back against the cage.

Price tries to throw a body punch but Johnson avoids it by throwing Price back against the cage.
Price tries for a takedown but Johnson manages to get underhooks.

Price breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Johnson uses good footwork to get in and out and land a nice right hand before Price has time to react.
Price throws a hook but Johnson avoids it easily.
Johnson misses with an uppercut.
Price lands three nice shots there - that looked like it hurt!

Marcus Johnson's cut is absolute horrible now. This looks like something out of a horror film with blood covering both fighters.
Johnson is landing a lot of head punches in this opening round! Price had better start moving his head a bit unless he wants his face to turn into mush.

Johnson uses good head movement to avoid the hook from Price.
Johnson throws an overhand right that lands on Price's shoulder, as Price tries to avoid the shot.

and Price takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Price is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by Johnson.
Well, he's not going to score with shots like that. A lazy body kick attempt from Johnson.

and Price cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.

The referee calls the doctor in to look at Marcus Johnson's cut. Oh no, the doctor has called an end to the bout!

During a confident post fight interview, Pete Price thanked all his fans. He seemed very genuine when describing how motivated his fans keep him.
