PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a super heavyweight MMA rules bout between Colby Taylor (ranked 820 p4p, 23766 weight class) and Mark Norman (ranked 24 p4p, 188 weight class). Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 32 - 8 - 2, fighting out of Montreal, Colby Taylor!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 4 - 1, fighting out of Las Vegas, Mark Norman!
The judges for this bout are John Kavanagh, Jonathan Paton and Anthony Taglia.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Taylor defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Norman.
A little feinted left hand from Taylor on the counter but he doesn't commit to it.
Nice uppercut lands for Taylor. That snapped Norman's head back.

Norman drives through with a takedown into Taylor's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position.
Taylor pulls Norman in close to his closed guard and prevents Norman from doing any damage or advancing position.
Norman tries to free his leg and advance position but Taylor is retaining full guard.
Norman sitting in guard, not really doing much.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Norman stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Taylor swivels though and keeps the full guard.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
Norman is fighting to break Taylor's control of his arms but Taylor is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Norman fails with the takedown.
Taylor swung with a counter right hand that didn't connect.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Norman fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Taylor avoids it really well and circles away.
Colby Taylor has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Mark Norman.
Norman moves out of range of the strikes.
Taylor looks to be in better condition than last time we saw him fight. Obviously he's been working hard on his cardio.

Norman closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
Taylor makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Taylor.
Taylor is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Taylor is looking to take a break and control but Norman is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Norman controlling the position for now.

Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Taylor in particular looking to stall.
Norman has found himself in a tricky position here. He's been working his transitions in training so let's see if he can work his way out of it.
Norman is refusing to be controlled, as Taylor sits in half guard.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Norman is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Taylor is looking to take a break and control but Norman is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Norman is looking to control Taylor's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Norman avoid being mounted?

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Mark Norman will probably get the nod.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare each other down, ready to get back to the action.

Norman changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Taylor tries to avoid it but Norman manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Taylor to the ground. Taylor escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Taylor stuffs the takedown.
Norman ducks under a wild hook from Taylor.

Norman looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.
Norman stalling.
Taylor tries to roll over but Norman keeps him under control.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Norman's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.
Taylor wants to get back to full guard.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Excellent takedown into side control there by Norman.
Taylor tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Norman is moving around in side control but his primary objective seems to be to maintain the position.
Taylor is looking for a sweep.
Norman in side control, just content to control the action for now.

Taylor tries to buck Norman off but Norman is having none of it.
Norman is maintaining the dominant position - no doubt Taylor will start to get frustrated soon if he's not already.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up.
Norman looks for a takedown but Taylor sprawls well.

Taylor scores with a jab to the jaw.
Norman has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Norman has a takedown stuffed.
Taylor misses with a hook. Norman ducked under it nicely.

Mark Norman showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. This is the final round!

Taylor throws a body shot but no joy.
Norman misses with a takedown attempt
and Taylor counters with a nice jab to the body that keeps Norman thinking.
Norman defending well as Taylor loads up on a big left hand.

Taylor scores with a sloppy punch to the body. Not much technique there but it did the business.
Norman slips a jab from Taylor.
Norman fails with the takedown.
Taylor feints a straight left to the body, then turns around with a flashy move and hits Normans jaw with a dramatic spinning back fist!

Norman closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
Taylor gets back to half guard.
Norman is trying to advance to mount but he's lost his balance and Taylor reverses the position - he's now on top in Norman's guard.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Norman has his hands on Taylor's head, controlling the position.

Norman wants to sweep but no luck.
Taylor is stalling in the full guard.
Norman is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Taylor stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Norman swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Norman has Taylor pulled in close to control his posture.
It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up.
Wow, both these guys are really going for it!
Taylor takes a step towards his opponent and connects with a left hand, before circling away.
Norman closes the distance and clinches up with Taylor, looking for a takedown. Norman pushes Taylor against the cage but Taylor circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.

Taylor is looking to improve his position.

Norman trying to pass the guard but Taylor defending well.
Norman perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.

Taylor wants to control but Norman is keeping busy and won't allow it.
Taylor is in trouble now - Norman has advanced to mount!

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Colby Taylor.
I think Norman has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
